Doyle Samuel Dotson III is the Chief of Police for the Amtrak Police Department. He was previously St Louis' Police Commissioner from 2013 to 2017. [3]
Dotson is a 1987 graduate of Metro Academic and Classical High School. [4] [5] He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management from Webster University and a Masters in Business Administration from Fontbonne University. [6] [7] [8] He is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police.
Dotson joined the Metropolitan Police Department,City of St. Louis on October 11,1993;he was assigned to the Fourth District. In 2001,he was promoted to sergeant where he served in the office of the Chief and the Ninth District. In 2007,he was promoted to lieutenant where he served in the office of the Chief. In 2008,he was promoted to captain where he served in the office of the Chief,the Seventh District,and the Board of Police Commissioners. Prior to being named Police Commissioner,he served as the city's operations director. [9] [10] [11]
He became St. Louis' 34th Police Commissioner on December 14,2012. In 2016 he stood for Mayor of St. Louis. [12] He resigned as Police Commissioner on April 17,2017,when Lyda Krewson became Mayor. [13] After that he worked as Director of Security for the Washington Nationals baseball team, [14] before being appointed in October 2018 as assistant chief of police for Amtrak. [3]
Dotson disclosed that for years he had been estranged from his mother,who in 2018 was convicted for theft of over $2 million from a real estate company. [15]

A Democrat,he historically had bipartisan support as a prosecutor and won re-election in 1994,1998,2002,2006,2010 and 2014,often unopposed,but by wide margins when he had an opponent. McCulloch held the highest paid position within St. Louis County government with an annual salary of $160,000. In 2018,he lost his bid for re-election in the Democratic primary to reformist challenger Wesley Bell by a 13.24% margin.

Anthony Lamar Smith was a 24-year-old African American man from St. Louis,Missouri,who was shot and killed by then St. Louis Police officer Jason Stockley following a car chase on December 20,2011. On September 15,2017,Stockley was found not guilty of first-degree murder,and protests erupted in St. Louis.
Beginning on the afternoon of September 15,2017,a series of protests took place in St. Louis,Missouri,following the acquittal of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley in the shooting of Anthony Lamar Smith,a black man. Over 160 people were arrested during the first three days of demonstrations,with largely peaceful protests. There has been significant criticism around the police and governmental response to protests,resulting in lawsuits from the ACLU.

Currently,Bell holds the office of Prosecuting Attorney for St. Louis County,Missouri. In a major upset,he soundly defeated long-time yet controversial county prosecutor Bob McCulloch in the August 2018 Democratic primary election. Bell became the first black county prosecuting attorney in St. Louis County history when he took office in January 2019.

Spencer ran in the 2021 St. Louis mayoral election,finishing as a top-two candidate in the primary election. She lost in the general election to Tishaura Jones.
On June 28,2020,during the George Floyd protests in St. Louis,Missouri,Patricia and Mark McCloskey pointed firearms and yelled at protesters marching through the private neighborhood they co-owned. Some protesters yelled back. The incident gained national news coverage and sparked controversy.
The 2021 St. Louis mayoral election occurred in two stages,with a unified primary on March 2,2021,and a two-candidate general election on April 6,2021. Incumbent Democratic mayor Lyda Krewson was eligible to seek re-election to a second term in office,but chose to retire.
Sam Dotson abruptly retired on the same April day that Krewson took over as mayor.
