William Crawford Gorgas KCMG was a United States Army physician and 22nd Surgeon General of the U.S. Army (1914–1918). He is best known for his work in Florida,Havana and at the Panama Canal in abating the transmission of yellow fever and malaria by controlling the mosquitoes that carry these diseases,for which he used the discoveries made by the Cuban doctor Carlos J. Finlay. At first,Finlay's strategy was greeted with considerable skepticism and opposition to such hygiene measures. However,the measures Gorgas put into practice as the head of the Panama Canal Zone Sanitation Commission saved thousands of lives and contributed to the success of the canal's construction.

Hurricane Danny was the only hurricane to make landfall in the United States during the 1997 Atlantic hurricane season,and the second hurricane and fourth tropical storm of the season. The system became the earliest-formed fifth tropical or subtropical storm of the Atlantic season in history when it attained tropical storm strength on July 17,and held that record until the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season when Tropical Storm Emily broke that record by several days. Like the previous four tropical or subtropical cyclones of the season,Danny had a non-tropical origin,after a trough spawned convection that entered the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Danny was guided northeast through the Gulf of Mexico by two high pressure areas,a rare occurrence in the middle of July. After making landfall on the Gulf Coast,Danny tracked across the southeastern United States and ultimately affected parts of New England with rain and wind.

On November 22,2018,Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr.,an African-American man,was shot three times from behind and killed by Hoover police officer David Alexander on the night of Thanksgiving,at the Riverchase Galleria shopping mall in Hoover,Alabama. Police responded to a shooting at the mall where two people were shot. Another African-American man suspected in the first shooting was arrested in Georgia a week later and charged in the shooting of one of those injured. Bradford was holding a legally owned weapon when shot and was not involved in the prior shooting incident,although near the crime scene. The shooting of Bradford was immediately controversial,and was condemned by the Alabama National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as an example of racially biased policing.
