Dare County Board of Commissioners

The Dare County Board of Commissioners is the governing body of Dare County, North Carolina . It runs in the manner of a county commission. It has seven seats held by elected officials called County Commissioners. The Commissioners are elected at large in countywide elections and serve four-year staggered terms. The Board elects a chairman and vice-chair for a one-year term at its organizational meeting in December. [1]

Contents

The Board has countywide responsibility for educational funding, libraries, Parks and Recreation, and tax assessment. The Board is the sole governing body for the unincorporated areas of Dare County including Colington, Martin’s Point, Manns Harbor, Stumpy Point, East Lake, Wanchese, northern Roanoke Island, and all of Hatteras Island. In these areas, the County is responsible for planning and zoning, solid waste management and law enforcement. [2]

Meetings

The Board meets on the first Monday of the month at 9:00 AM and the third Monday of each month at 5:00 PM at the Dare County Administrative Annex located at 954 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo.

Issues

In 2008, the Board adopted a resolution making English the official language of Dare County. The resolution was crafted by Jack Shea. The Commissioners voting for the resolution were Jack Shea, Richard Johnson, Mike Johnson and Max Dutton. Dissenting Commissioners were Warren Judge, Allen Burrus and Virginia Tillett. [3]

Allen Burrus was appointed to the Board in February 2006 to fill the remaining term of Joseph "Mac" Midgett who died in Jan 2006. [4] Burrus was then elected to the seat in 2008.

2010 Election

All incumbent Commissioners ran for re-election in 2010.

  1. Virginia Tillett in District 1 ran unopposed and was re-elected.
  2. Max Dutton in District 2 ran unopposed and was re-elected.
  3. Jack Shea, in District 5 (At-Large District) was challenged by Robin Mann. [5] Shea won re-election 53/47. [6]

2006 Election

Max Dutton was elected in 2006 in an upset over incumbent Chairman Stan White, 52% to 48% in the Primary. He was unopposed in the General Election.

Jack Shea was unopposed in the primary. He defeated Rex Tillett in the General Election. Tillett is the nephew of North Carolina State Senator Marc Basnight.

Virginia Tillett won the primary over two challengers, Robin Mann and Sybil Daniels Ross. She defeated John M. Robbins, III in the General Election.

Today, Wanchese is the center of commercial fishing and boatbuilding on the Outer Banks.

Colington Island

Colington Island is an island located to the west of Kill Devil Hills in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The island is located at the converging point of Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound, Croatan Sound, and Roanoke Sound. While it is commonly referred to as one island, there are actually two separate islands, Big Colington Island and Little Colington Island. Colington Harbour is a gated community located on Big Colington Island.

Manteo High School is one of ten schools located in Dare County, North Carolina. The high school was named after the Native American chief Manteo, who assisted the Roanoke Colony. Renovations to the school were completed in 2007.

North Carolina Highway 345 State highway in Dare County, North Carolina, US

North Carolina Highway 345 (NC 345) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina connecting Wanchese and Manteo on Roanoke Island. The highway begins at The Lane and Thicket Lump Drive south of the town marina. Following Mill Landing Road through Wanchese, the road eventually becomes the western boundary for the Roanoke Island Marshes Dedicated Nature Preserve, before reaching its northern terminus at US 64.

The Lost Colony is an historical outdoor drama, written by American Paul Green and produced since 1937 in Manteo, North Carolina. It is based on accounts of Sir Walter Raleigh's attempts in the 16th century to establish a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island, then part of the Colony of Virginia. The play has been performed in an outdoor amphitheater located on the site of the original Roanoke Colony in the Outer Banks. More than four million people have seen it since 1937. It received a special Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre award in 2013.

Manteo was a Croatan Native American, and was a member of the local tribe that befriended the English explorers who landed at Roanoke Island in 1584. Though many stories claim he was a chief, it is understood that his mother was actually the principal leader of the tribe. This leadership would not have automatically passed down to her children as many English at the time may have assumed.

Dare County Schools

Dare County Schools (DCS) is a school district for Dare County, North Carolina. Its headquarters are in Nags Head.

James Easley Edmunds II is an American politician. He has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2010, representing the 60th district in Southside Virginia. He is a member of the Republican Party.

First Flight High School Public school in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, United States

First Flight High School is a public high school serving grades 9–12. The school was established in 2004, and is located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Stan M. White is a North Carolina politician who served as a member of the North Carolina Senate. A Democrat, he was appointed to represent Senate District 1 following the resignation of Sen. Marc Basnight just before the opening of the 2011 session of the legislature. He went on to lose the 2012 election to retain his seat by 21 votes out of more than 87,000 cast. White announced plans to run for the seat again in 2014.
