Colington Island is an island located to the west of Kill Devil Hills in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The island is located at the converging point of Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound, Croatan Sound, and Roanoke Sound. While it is commonly referred to as one island, there are actually two separate islands, Big Colington Island and Little Colington Island. Colington Harbour is a gated community located on Big Colington Island.

The residents of Colington Island are governed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Colington is part of District 2, along with the towns of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

Residents are zoned to Dare County Schools. The specific schools are: First Flight Elementary School, First Flight Middle School, and First Flight High School. [1] Prior to 2004 students in the First Flight High area were zoned to Manteo High School. [2]

It contains the largest part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Prior to European settlement the island was inhabited by Croatoan Native Americans.

Manteo High School is one of ten schools located in Dare County, North Carolina. The high school was named after the Native American chief Manteo, who assisted the Roanoke Colony. Renovations to the school were completed in 2007.

Dare County Schools (DCS) is a school district for Dare County, North Carolina. Its headquarters are in Nags Head.

The Dare County Board of Commissioners is the governing body of Dare County, North Carolina. It runs in the manner of a county commission. It has seven seats held by elected officials called County Commissioners. The Commissioners are elected at large in countywide elections and serve four-year staggered terms. The Board elects a chairman and vice-chair for a one-year term at its organizational meeting in December.

The Outer Banks Hospital (OBH) is a critical access hospital located in Nags Head, Dare County on the Outer Banks. It is 60%/40% partnership of the ECU Health and Chesapeake Regional Healthcare (CRH). The hospital opened in March 2002. The hospital has 21 general hospital beds. It also includes three Shared Inpatient/Ambulatory Surgery, one Endoscopy, and one C-Section operating rooms.
