The Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is the Academy Award given to the best achievement in makeup and hairstyling for film. Traditionally, three films have been nominated each year with exceptions in the early 1980s and 2002 when there were only two nominees; in 1999, when there were four nominees. Beginning with the 92nd Academy Awards, five films were nominated.

An animated feature is defined by the Academy as a film with a running time of more than 40 minutes in which characters' performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique, a significant number of the major characters are animated, and animation figures in no less than 75 percent of the running time. Martin Samuel is a British three-time Oscar nominated hair stylist in the category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling. He is most famous for doing the hair on the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies along with Ve Neill. He has had over 55 credits since 1974.
Daniel Charles Striepeke was an American makeup artist who was nominated for two Academy Awards and who has often done make-up on Tom Hanks films. With a 40-year career he did makeup on over 100 films. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards in 2004. He also worked on TV shows such as Lost in Space.
