Dean Alan Carnegie is an American stage magician, escape artist and painter. He has appeared on numerous television programs and has performed for three different US Presidents. He is called 'The Artist of Mystery'. [1]
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he grew up on a horse and cattle farm in Fauquier County, Virginia. [2] He became interested in magic at the age of 8 after watching the movie Houdini starring Tony Curtis. Later a performance of the Houdini Water Torture Cell by magician Doug Henning helped to seal his fascination of the art of magic. [3] In his formative years as a magician he learned mostly from magic books. He loved magic but his first love was escapes because he had been highly influenced by the life of Houdini. One year the local branch of his Post Office challenged him to escape from one of their postal service mailbags and he successfully escaped. [4] Carnegie performed as often as he could in his teens and after he graduated he enrolled in a special course in magic called The Chavez Course of Magic and Manipulation. [5]
Carnegie won a scholarship for art school, but instead put all his attention towards performing. [6] In 1997, Carnegie began painting again. His subject matter is usually focused on magicians. He has created more than 30 magic-related works of art. His artwork has appeared in numerous magazines. The July/August 2005 issue of Elan magazine featured one of his paintings on the cover. [7] In August & September 2007 two of his paintings appeared on the cover of MAGIC , [8] making him the only magician in the history of the magazine to appear on two consecutive covers.
In 2001, Carnegie held the office of Mid-Atlantic Regional Vice President for the Society of American Magicians. From 2002-2005 Carnegie performed in his own theatre dubbed The Underground Magic Theatre in Sterling, Virginia. [9] Today Carnegie is a full-time performing magician. He also writes a bi-monthly column on magic for a magic periodical. He has co-authored two books on escapes called The Escape Biz Volumes 1&2. The Washington Post wrote about him, "Take Howie Mandel's boyish bald charm, mix it with David Copperfield's magical charisma and poof! You get Dean Carnegie, known as Carnegie: Artist of Mystery." Its purpose is "to advance, elevate, and preserve magic as a performing art, to promote harmonious fellowship throughout the world of magic, and to maintain and improve ethical standards in the field of magic." To promote these endeavors the S.A.M. presents awards and fellowships in recognition of outstanding achievement in the Art of Magic.
Theodore "Dash" Hardeen was a Hungarian-American magician and escape artist who was the younger brother of Harry Houdini. Hardeen, who usually billed himself as the "brother of Houdini", was the founder of the Magician's Guild. Hardeen was the first magician to conceive escaping from a straitjacket in full view of the audience, rather than behind a curtain.
Whit "Pop" Haydn is an American magician, and the winner of seven performing awards from the Academy of Magical Arts. He has been nominated by his fellow members for "Magician of the Year" in Close-Up, Parlor and Stage, Bar and Lecturer more than thirty times. In February 2006, he also became Vice-President of that organization, and served for four years in that capacity.
Dorothy Dietrich is an American stage magician and escapologist, best known for performing the bullet catch in her mouth and the first woman to perform a straitjacket escape while suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a burning rope. She was the first woman to gain prominence as an escape artist since the days of Houdini, breaking the glass ceiling for women in the field of escapes and magic.
The Chinese Water Torture Cell is a predicament escape made famous by Hungarian-American magician Harry Houdini. The illusion consists of three parts: first, the magician's feet are locked in stocks; next, he is suspended in mid-air from his ankles with a restraint brace; finally, he is lowered into a glass tank overflowing with water and the restraint is locked to the top of the cell.
Stevan "Mr. Escape" Baker was an American illusionist, comedian, and magician best known as an escape artist. During his career from 1967 through the early 1990s Baker appeared on Dick Clark's LIVE Wednesday, Games People Play, and was a star on an HBO special along with Tony Curtis and special guest star Dorothy Dietrich, called The World's Greatest Escapes, and several times on That's Incredible!.

Christopher Alfred Goode, better known as Chris Cross, is an English magician, escapologist, and former contortionist. He has performed worldwide and appeared on British television. He was born in 1989 at Newcastle General Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.
Curtis Lovell II is an American illusionist and escape artist. He is known for his high-profile escape performances and his events for corporations. The Washington Times interviewed him for a political piece subtitled "Houdini Factor". He was referred to in an article in weekly entertainment newspaper Citizen LA as "the premiere [sic] escape artist of our time." He has also received coverage for his stunts, including a performance with actor Tony Curtis and Larry King.
George Schindler is an American stage magician, magic consultant, comedian, actor, ventriloquist and writer based in New York. In addition to creating noteworthy illusions and publishing many books on magic, Schindler has performed at venues around the world and is currently "lifetime dean" of the Society of American Magicians, having previous tenure in the "S.A.M. Hall of Fame" as well as president and spokesperson. From the 1950s to the 1960s, he had also been a frequent contributor to Billboard Magazine's comedy, magic and vaudeville columns.
Samuel Spencer Baldwin, or Samri Baldwin, most well known as "The White Mahatma" was an American magician.
