Deborah York, born 1964 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, [1] is a classical soprano in concert and opera, and a teacher and conductor. She has British and German nationalities and has been living in Berlin since 1996.
York studied piano from the age of six with Avis Benn and studied singing from the age of nine with Greta Rawson in Sheffield. Whilst at Aston Comprehensive School she studied percussion with Len Addy, playing in Rotherham Youth Orchestra and Killamarsh Silver Band. At the age of 16 she began singing lessons with Jean Allister in Leeds. She studied musicology at the University of Manchester, graduating with a First Class Honours Degree. She then went on to study singing for 1 year in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Laura Sarti, after which she worked privately with Janice Chapman in London.
Her operatic career began with Mozart, singing Servilia for Glyndebourne Touring Opera and Barbarina at Covent Garden under Bernard Haitink. She then sang Donizetti at Covent Garden and for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera she premiered the role of Mirror in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Second Mrs Kong. She has appeared regularly at the Berlin State Opera and Bavarian State Opera. Her portrait of Anne Truelove in Stravinsky’s The Rake's Progress , recorded for Deutsche Grammophon with the London Symphony Orchestra and John Eliot Gardiner, was awarded a Grammy Award. Her recording of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic, The Last Concert, won the International Classical Music Award best orchestral category 2017.
She took part in the project of Ton Koopman to record the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir. [2]
Kathleen Deanna Battle is an American operatic soprano known for her distinctive vocal range and tone. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Battle initially became known for her work within the concert repertoire through performances with major orchestras during the early and mid-1970s. She made her opera debut in 1975. Battle expanded her repertoire into lyric soprano and coloratura soprano roles during the 1980s and early 1990s, until her eventual dismissal from the Metropolitan Opera in 1994. She later has focused on recording and the concert stage. After a 22-year absence from the Met, Battle performed a concert of spirituals at the Metropolitan Opera House in November 2016.

Deborah Cook was an American operatic soprano who had a prolific international opera career during the 1970s and 1980s. Her career was primarily focused in Germany where she lived from 1972 through 1985. However, she did travel extensively throughout Europe and in the United States, performing in operas, concerts, recitals, and recording for radio productions. A gifted coloratura soprano, Cook sang a wide repertoire that encompassed English, German, French, and Italian opera from a variety of musical periods. She notably sang in a number of world premieres including Hans Werner Henze's We Come to the River at the Royal Opera, London in 1976.

Dame Sarah Patricia Connolly is an English mezzo-soprano. Although best known for her baroque and classical roles, Connolly has a wide-ranging repertoire which has included works by Wagner as well as various 20th-century composers. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to music.
Inga Nielsen was a Danish soprano who had an active international opera career from 1971 to 2006. A child prodigy, Nielsen performed on American radio during the 1950s, beginning at the age of six, and also released some commercial recordings of Danish folk songs and Christmas carols as a child. She began her opera career performing parts in the lyric soprano repertory and then became an admired singer of dramatic soprano roles, beginning in the late 1980s. She was a particularly renowned interpreter of the roles of Konstanze in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail and the title role in Richard Strauss's Salome. She excelled in portraying some of the more rarely heard and demanding dramatic soprano roles such as the woman in Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung, Ursula in Mathis der Maler and Jenny in Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

Rae Woodland was a British soprano who studied with Roy Henderson. Her debut was as Queen of the Night at Sadlers Wells. She sang in many European festivals, and debuted at Covent Garden in La sonnambula with Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti. She was first asked to sing for Benjamin Britten on the English Opera Group's tour of Russia, and played many roles for him subsequently. She also created roles for Gottfried von Einem, Nicholas Maw and Sir Arthur Bliss, and made many live broadcasts for the BBC, from the RAH Proms to Friday Night is Music Night. She retired from the opera stage in 1984. She then taught singing at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and at the Britten-Pears School in Snape Maltings on the invitation of Sir Peter Pears.
