Deering was a city in Cumberland County, Maine which was incorporated in 1871 and annexed by the neighboring City of Portland in 1899. [2] Until 1871, Deering was a part of Saccarappa, which also included what is now neighboring Westbrook. In that year, the towns split with little opposition. The 1880 United States Census counted 4,324 residents of the newly formed town. [3] In 1892, Deering was incorporated as a city. [4] In 1899, Deering was annexed by Portland, becoming the northern neighborhoods of the city. [5]

Engine Company Number Nine Firehouse, also known as the Arbor Street Firehouse, is an historic former firehouse at 17 Arbor street in the North Deering neighborhood of Portland, Maine. It was constructed in 1902-03, shortly after Deering was annexed to Portland. It was built to reflect Portland's commitment to the newly annexed suburb as well as due to the city's switch to a paid fire department. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in October 2010. It now houses a commercial business.

Fore Street is a downtown street in Portland, Maine, United States. Dating to 1724, it runs for around 1 mile (1.6 km), from the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill in the northeast to Pleasant Street in the southwest. Near its midsection, Fore Street crosses Franklin Street. It splits briefly at Boothby Square, shortly after passing the United States Custom House. The street passes through the Old Port district.
Woodfords Corner is a neighborhood and major intersection in Portland, Maine, United States. Centered around the intersections of Forest Avenue and Woodford Street, it is named for brothers Chauncey, Ebenezer and Isaiah Woodford, merchants from Connecticut who settled in the area.
The Market House of Portland, Maine, was located in what was then known as Market Square or Haymarket Square between 1825 and 1888, when it was demolished. In 1833, the building was modified to become Portland's first city hall. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, which now stands in its place, was dedicated in 1891.
Woodfords Congregational Church is a church on Woodford Street in Portland, Maine, United States. Located a few yards west of Woodfords Corner, the church was built in 1959, replacing one which was designed by architects Francis H. Fassett and E. F. Fassett and which stood, on the opposite side of what was then called Spring Street, between 1872 and 1956. The original church bell was moved to the new construction. The Parish House was built in 1926.
