Defence Training Estate

Last updated

Defence Training Estate is an organisation within the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence. It is the operating division of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, and is responsible for the management of the 78% of the MoD's estate allocated as Training Areas and Ranges. It provides sufficient and suitable estate to support the training requirements of the British Armed Forces, whilst ensuring environmental management and appropriate historical and archaeological preservation.

Structure and partners

The organisation is headquartered at Waterloo Lines, Warminster, [1] and has a number of regional headquarters responsible for the management of the training estate on a regional basis.

DTE works with nature conservation bodies to safeguard designated sites and protected species within the estate. These bodies include the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Countryside Council for Wales and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. [2]

Some practical support is outsourced to Landmarc Solutions, a joint venture between Interserve (a UK support services company) and PAE (an American multinational support services company owned by Lindsay Goldberg). [3] [4]

DTE runs five Air Weapons Ranges for military operational training: RAF Holbeach and RAF Donna Nook in Lincolnshire (England), RAF Pembrey in Carmarthenshire (Wales), the Tain Air Weapons Range in Rossshire and Cape Wrath in Sutherland (Scotland). A former air weapons range at RAF Wainfleet in Lincolnshire was decommissioned in 2009. It had been in use since 1890 for artillery training, originally by the 1st Lincolnshire Artillery Volunteers. [5]

Public access

DTE operate a principle of presumption of public access to the training estate. Access is limited where training and exercise activities are taking place or where the use of munitions precludes safe access. [6]

Conservation and archaeology

As much of the training estate remains undeveloped, either through habitation or agriculture, the training estate holds considerable conservation and archaeological value. [7]

A bombing range usually refers to a remote military aerial bombing and gunnery training range used by combat aircraft to attack ground targets, or a remote area reserved for researching, developing, testing and evaluating new weapons and ammunition. Bombing ranges are used for precision targeting of high-explosive aerial bombs, precision-guided munitions and other aircraft ordnance, as opposed to a field firing range used by infantry and tanks. Various non-explosive inert "practice bombs" are also extensively used for precision aerial targeting bombing practice—to simulate various explosive aerial bomb types and minimise damage and environmental impact to bombing ranges.

Wyke Regis Training Area is an army training area primarily located in the parish and town of Chickerell, but near to the parish of Wyke Regis in neighbouring Weymouth, Dorset, England. The training area is located at three different sites. It is part of the Ministry of Defence's Defence Training Estate (DTE), which covers 240,000 hectares of land across the country, used to train armed forces. Although mainly used by the army, the training area has allowed an increasing amount of public use of both the climbing facilities and adventure training over the last few years. When the firing range is in use, signs, restriction gates and red flags are used to require walkers to divert inland around the back of the range before returning to the Coastal Path.

This is the structure of the British Armed Forces, as of October 2021.
