Deirdre Doherty (born 14 March 1991) is an Irish dual code footballer who has played soccer for Women's National League (WNL) club Castlebar Celtic and the Republic of Ireland women's national team. She has also played inter county ladies' Gaelic football for her native Mayo, competing in the Ladies' National Football League and All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship.

Club career

Doherty is from Charlestown, County Mayo and played soccer at the Institute of Technology, Sligo. She was named 2011 Intervarsity Player of the Year, after Sligo finished as runners-up to the University of Limerick. [2] In September 2011, Doherty scored in Ballyglass's 3–1 FAI Women's Intermediate Cup final win over Raheny United. [3] She helped Sligo win the Irish Universities Premier League in 2012 [4] and 2013. [5]

For the 2013–14 season of the Women's National League (WNL), Doherty joined County Mayo club Castlebar Celtic. On her debut she scored twice in a 7–0 win at Lifford Ladies in the quarter-final of the FAI Women's Cup on 7 September 2013. [6] A league debut followed in a 4–2 win over Shamrock Rovers at Celtic Park, Castlebar, on 15 September. [7] On 29 September she scored the second goal in a 2–0 FAI Women's Cup semi final win over Wexford Youths, touching in club captain Emma Hansberry's free kick. [8] Doherty's first league goal for Celtic came on 13 October 2013, in a 2–0 home win over DLR Waves. [9]

In the 2013 FAI Women's Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium, Doherty scored a "spectacular" late equaliser for the underdogs Castlebar Celtic, but they eventually lost 3–2 to Raheny United after extra time. [10] Doherty had agreed to play in the final even though she had moved to the United Kingdom to continue her studies. [11]

International career

Youth

In February 2010, while a first year Health Science and Physiology student at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, Doherty was called up to the Republic of Ireland women's national under-19 football team panel. [12] [13] Still enrolled at Institute of Technology, Sligo, Doherty represented Ireland at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. [1] She scored against Mexico in a 4–2 defeat. [14]

Senior

In February 2013 Republic of Ireland women's national team coach Susan Ronan called up Doherty for the 2013 Cyprus Cup, as a replacement for Fiona O'Sullivan who had sustained a knee injury. Ronan said: "Deirdre was called into the U19 squad a few years ago but had to withdraw because of injury but I have kept an eye on her and she has been very impressive for Sligo IT this season". [15] Doherty won her first senior cap in a 0–0 draw with South Korea, staged in Paralimni on 11 March 2013. [16] She entered play as a 66th-minute substitute for Sara Lawlor. [17] Two days later she made another appearance, replacing Lawlor in the 67th minute of a 1–0 defeat by Finland. [18]

Doherty retained her place in the squad for Ireland's next match, and appeared as a 91st-minute substitute for Ruesha Littlejohn as Ireland recovered from 2–0 down to draw 2–2 in a friendly with Austria at Tallaght Stadium, Dublin, in June 2013. [19]

Gaelic football

Doherty played Gaelic football for Institute of Technology, Sligo, [20] as well as the Charlestown LGFA club. [21] Alongside her future Castlebar Celtic teammates Sarah Rowe and Aileen Gilroy, Doherty was part of a young County Mayo GAA team which won Division Two of the Ladies' National Football League in 2012, [22] then reached the Division One final the following year. [23]

In 2018 Doherty played for the Roger Casements GAA club from Coventry, who won the all-Britain junior championship. She was named to the 2018 Warwickshire GAA All-Star team. [24] Doherty returned to the Mayo squad for the 2020 All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship. [25]

Caroline Thorpe is an Irish former international football midfielder who played for Raheny United, Peamount United and DLR Waves of the Women's National League. She also represented English Premier League clubs Arsenal Ladies and Leeds United Ladies, as well as Memphis Mercury in America.

The League of Ireland Women's Premier Division is a professional women's association football league in the Republic of Ireland, organised by the League of Ireland, which began play in the 2023 season. The league consists of eleven teams, eight of which owned by clubs with men's teams in the League of Ireland's Premier Division or First Division. The premiers of the league qualify for the first round of the UEFA Women's Champions League in the following season.

Wexford FC Women's Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Crossabeg, County Wexford. Their senior team plays in the Women's National League. In the course of women's football in Ireland, Wexford have steadily been one of the league's strongest teams.

The 2015–16 Women's National League was the fifth season of the Women's National League. Two new clubs joined the league before the start of the season, restoring the number of teams in the league to eight. Kilkenny United were formed as expansion team while Raheny United's senior women's team merged with Shelbourne Ladies. This effectively saw Shelbourne Ladies takeover Raheny United's place in the WNL. The season also saw the introduction of the WNL Shield. Wexford Youths and Shelbourne Ladies finished the season as the league's two strongest teams. In the league itself, the two teams finished level on points before Wexford Youths retained the title after a play-off. Wexford Youths also completed a treble, having already won both the FAI Women's Cup and WNL Shield. Shelbourne Ladies were also runners up in the WNL Shield before going onto win the WNL Cup. Before the season was finished Castlebar Celtic withdrew because they were unable to field a team.

Dundalk Women's Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Dundalk, County Louth. They are the women's team of Dundalk F.C. They currently play in the Dublin Women's Soccer League. They represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2006–07 UEFA Women's Cup. An earlier Dundalk F.C. women's team also competed in the Ladies League of Ireland during the 1970s.

The Mayo Women's Football League is a women's association football league featuring teams from County Mayo. It is the sister league of the Mayo Association Football League. It has previously been known as the Mayo Ladies League. The league is a summer league, beginning in March and ending in September. In 2015 the league was sponsored by Artec Facilities Management, a company based in Belmullet. Teams from the league also compete for the Mayo Cup, the Mary Walsh Cup and the Mayo Shield. They also enter the Connaught Cup and the WFAI Intermediate Cup. The league's representative team won the 2006 FAI Women's Cup and then represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2007–08 UEFA Women's Cup.

Cora Staunton is an Irish sportswoman. She is best known as a ladies' Gaelic footballer, winning four All-Irelands and three Ladies' National Football League titles with Mayo. She has also been an All Star on eleven occasions. In addition to playing Gaelic football, Staunton has also played three other football codes at a senior level. In 2006, as an association footballer, she won an FAI Women's Cup winner's medal with the Mayo Ladies' League representative team. In 2013, she began playing rugby union for Castlebar Ladies in the Connacht Women's League. In she 2018 made her Australian rules football debut in the AFLW competition for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, establishing herself by 2022 as one of the league's all-time great goalkickers. She has also played for the Ireland women's international rules football team. Staunton works as a HSE liaison officer, working with women from the Irish Travellers community.

Limerick Women's Football Club was an Irish association football club based in Limerick. It is the women's section of Limerick F.C. Their senior women's team made their debut in the Women's National League in 2018. However the club has been organising women's teams, often in conjunction with the Limerick Women's & Schoolgirls' Soccer League, since at least 1973. Limerick have been credited as the inaugural winners of both the Ladies League of Ireland and the FAI Women's Cup. Ladies team was dissolved after financial collapse of Limerick F.C. main division.

Sarah Rowe is a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international. In addition to association football, Rowe has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW. At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic, Raheny United, Shelbourne, Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women. Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/FAI Women's Cup double. In 2023, she returned to association football briefly playing for Melbourne Victory and then for Bohemians.

Aileen Gilroy is an Australian rules footballer playing for Hawthorn in the AFL Women's (AFLW). Gilroy signed with North Melbourne as a rookie during the 2019 rookie signing period in August. She made her debut against Melbourne at Casey Fields in the opening round of the 2020 season.

The 2013 FAI Women's Cup Final was the final match of the 2013 FAI Women's Cup, the national association football Cup of the Republic of Ireland. The match took place on 3 November 2013 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Raheny United and Castlebar Celtic contested the match.

Emma Hansberry is an Irish footballer and coach who plays for Women's National League (WNL) club Sligo Rovers. She previously represented Castlebar Celtic and Wexford Youths. An attacking midfielder, she has also represented the Republic of Ireland women's national team. In Gaelic football Hansberry played for the St Mary's club and her county, Sligo GAA.

Emma Mullin is an Irish ladies' Gaelic footballer and association footballer. In Gaelic football, she won the All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship four times with Mayo GAA. In association football, she has played for the Republic of Ireland women's national football team.
