Democratic People's Party (Nigeria)

The Democratic People's Party is a Nigerian political party founded in 2006 by an aggrieved faction of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. [1] The party, which has a broad political base, supports economic deregulation, human rights; and greater funding for health care and education, among other goals.

In the 21 April 2007 presidential elections, the winner was Umaru Musa Yar'Adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 24,638,063 votes. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) won 6,605,299 votes, Atiku Abubakar of the Action Congress (AC) won 2,637,848 votes and Orji Uzor Kalu of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) won 608,803 votes. Attahiru Bafarawa of the Democratic People's Party (DPP) came last with 289,324 votes. [2]

Jeremiah Useni, founding chairman of the party, was a former minister in the military government of General Sani Abacha. He was suspended indefinitely in December 2008 for saying the death of Ken Sara-Wiwa was a national sacrifice. [3] He was succeeded by Biodun Ogunbiyi, who criticized Useni's poor leadership which failed to win any seats in the Senate or House of Representatives in the April 2007 elections. [4]

Jeremiah Timbut Useni is a retired Nigerian army lieutenant general, who served as minister responsible for the administration of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja under the Sani Abacha military junta. He served Nigeria in various capacities such as Minister for Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigeria Army. Useni also served as Deputy Chairman of one of the significant parties in Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party. He was elected Senator for the Plateau South constituency of Plateau State, Nigeria in the March 2015 national elections. Useni was running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Sahabi Alhaji Yaú is a Nigerian politician who was elected Senator in 2007 on the platform of All Nigeria Peoples Party to represent Zamfara North district of Zamfara State.

Ahmed Rufai Sani Yerima is a Nigerian politician who was Governor of Zamfara State from May 1999 to May 2007, and served as Senator for Zamfara West and Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The 2008 Sokoto State gubernatorial by-election occurred on May 24, 2008. PDP candidate Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko won the election, defeating DPP Muhammed Dingyadi and other candidates.

The 2003 Edo State gubernatorial election occurred on the 19th of April, 2003. Incumbent Governor PDP's Lucky Igbinedion won election for a second term, defeating ANPP's Roland Owie and three other candidates.
