Derek Vaughan CBE is a Welsh Labour politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Wales between 2009 and 2019.
Vaughan was born in Merthyr Tydfil, first studying at Afon Taf High School before working locally as an engineering apprentice and later for the Valuation Office Agency.
He then went on to study Politics and History at Swansea University after which he returned to the Valuation Agency and then full-time as a trades union official for the Public and Commercial Services Union, a role he held until 2004.
Vaughan was first elected to Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council in 1995, representing Neath North. He became leader of the Labour group, and leader of the council, in 2004 before standing down in 2010 following his election as MEP. [4]
He was also leader of the Welsh Local Government Association from 2005 to 2008 and deputy leader from 2008 to 2009. [5]
In 2009, Vaughan was the first candidate on the Labour Party list for the 2009 European Parliament election in Wales, and was elected on 8 June. He stood successfully for re-election in the European Election 2014.
In the European Parliament, he is vice-chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control and a member of the Committee on Regional Development. He is also part of the delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand.
In 2016, the Welsh Election Study found that Vaughan, along with two other Welsh MEPs from Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives, had less name recognition than an invented name. [6]
Vaughan was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 Birthday Honours. [7]
Aberavon is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom since 2015 by Stephen Kinnock of the Welsh Labour Party. It includes the town of Aberavon, although the largest town in the constituency is Port Talbot.

Keith Richard Taylor was a Green Party of England and Wales politician who was MEP for South East England from 2010 to 2019 and was the Party's animal rights spokesperson until his retirement in 2019. He was one of the two Principal Speakers of the party from August 2004 to November 2006.

Margaret Lucille Jeanne Parker is an English politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East Midlands region between 2014 and 2019. She was born in Grantham and educated at Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School and De Montfort University, where she read Law.
Christina Rees is a Member of Parliament who served as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn from 2017 to 2020. She has been MP for Neath since 2015. Rees was elected as a Welsh Labour Co-operative Party MP, but was suspended from the party on 13 October 2022 due to allegations of bullying.
The 2019 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's component of the 2019 European Parliament election, held on Thursday 23 May 2019 and the results were announced on Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May 2019, after all the other EU countries had voted. This was the United Kingdom's final participation in a European Parliament election before leaving the European Union on 31 January 2020, and was also the last election to be held under the provisions of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002 before its repeal under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018.
The 2009 Welsh Labour leadership election was held following the resignation of Rhodri Morgan, who stepped down after nine years as First Minister of Wales. Morgan had made clear his intent to resign in 2009 as far back as 2005. As Morgan had been elected unopposed in 2000, this was the first contested election for the Welsh Labour leadership for more than a decade.
The 2018 Welsh Labour deputy leadership election took place from 16 February to 21 April 2018. It followed a review in the Welsh Labour Party which for the first time formalised the role of Deputy Leader. As the then leader Carwyn Jones was male, only women were eligible to stand for the role of deputy.
The next Welsh Labour leadership election is an expected election within Welsh Labour. Current leader Mark Drakeford was elected in December 2018 on a pledge to serve five years, this means a contest could occur in late 2023 or possibly in 2024. The next scheduled Senedd election is due on or before 7 May 2026.
