Desmond: Here I AM is a jazz compilation album issued by the Fresh Sound label in 2015. [1] It contains the first two record releases of alto saxophonist Paul Desmond as a leader: Paul Desmond Quintet with The Bill Bates Singers, a 10-inch vinyl record from 1954, [2] and Paul Desmond Quartet Featuring Don Elliott, a 12-inch from 1956, [2] both originally released on the label Fantasy Records. [3]

A compilation album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers. If by one artist, then generally the tracks were not originally intended for release together as a single work, but may be collected together as a greatest hits album or box set. If from several performers, there may be a theme, topic, time period, or genre which links the tracks, or they may have been intended for release as a single work—such as a tribute album. When the tracks are by the same recording artist, the album may be referred to as a retrospective album or an anthology.

Fresh Sound, or Fresh Sound New Talent, is a jazz record label established in Barcelona, Spain, by Jordi Pujol. The label was initially founded as a reissue label.

Alto saxophone type of saxophone

The alto saxophone, also referred to as the alto sax, is a member of the saxophone family of woodwind instruments invented by Belgian instrument designer Adolphe Sax in the 1840s, and patented in 1846. It is pitched in E, and is smaller than the tenor, but larger than the soprano. The alto sax is the most common saxophone and is commonly used in concert bands, chamber music, solo repertoire, military bands, marching bands, and jazz. The fingerings of the different saxophones are all the same so a saxophone player can play any type of saxophone.

Contents

The album features different lineups led by Desmond, including highlights musicians like tenor saxophonist Dave van Kriedt, trumpeter Don Elliott, guitarist Barney Kessel, drummer Joe Dodge, and bassists Norman Bates and Bob Bates.

Tenor saxophone type of saxophone

The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the Alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists".

Trumpet musical instrument with the highest register in the brass family

A trumpet is a brass instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. The trumpet group contains the instruments with the highest register in the brass family. Trumpet-like instruments have historically been used as signaling devices in battle or hunting, with examples dating back to at least 1500 BC; they began to be used as musical instruments only in the late 14th or early 15th century. Trumpets are used in art music styles, for instance in orchestras, concert bands, and jazz ensembles, as well as in popular music. They are played by blowing air through nearly-closed lips, producing a "buzzing" sound that starts a standing wave vibration in the air column inside the instrument. Since the late 15th century they have primarily been constructed of brass tubing, usually bent twice into a rounded rectangular shape.

The repertoire consists of original compositions by Desmond, Elliott and van Kriedt, as well as a handful of standards, including songs authored by Tom Adair, J. Fred Coots, Matt Dennis, B.G. DeSylva, James Dyrenforth, Carroll Gibbons, Haven Gillespie, Jerome Kern, Gerry Mulligan, and the brothers George and Ira Gershwin.

Thomas Montgomery Adair was an American songwriter, composer, and screenwriter.

Matt Dennis American singer, pianist, band leader, arranger, and writer of music

Matthew Loveland Dennis was an American singer, pianist, band leader, arranger, and writer of music for popular songs.

James Dyrenforth was an American actor and songwriter.
