Devil is the fourth and final studio album by Michigan post-hardcore band Chiodos, released on April 1, 2014. The album takes its name from the band's definition of the word "Devil." Returning vocalist Craig Owens explains:

Devil isn't something I thought long and hard about. It is something that hit me, and hard. I asked myself if I was brave enough to stand behind such a strong, emotionally evoking word.. and I knew right then, that was it. This title is not to be confused with the muscled, red horned man surrounded by fire. This is about the temptations of everyday life; the things that become regrets; the moments where you are forced to make a choice that will determine how it is that you look at yourself for the rest of your life. This album is my definition of Devil. [4]

The band has also cited American writer Mitch Albom as a source of inspiration for the album. [5] [6]

This was the first album the band recorded after reuniting with original vocalist Craig Owens and original drummer Derrick Frost, and the first and only album to feature Thomas Erak of The Fall of Troy as lead guitarist after the departure of original lead guitarist Jason Hale. The album was released on April 1, 2014, by Razor & Tie. Several songs and videos are slated to be released leading up to the album's official debut. [5] [7] [8]

The band headlined the Devil's Dance Tour 2014 early in the year in support of the album. [8] [9]

Sales

The album debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200, with more than 18,000 copies sold during the first week.[ citation needed ] As of June 2015, the album has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide.

At Alternative Press , Jason Pettigrew rated the album four stars out of five, writing that on the release the band "aren't settling for anything less than world domination" because "Producer Dave Bottrill has molded Chiodos's vision into a cohesive arc of power, finesse, quirks and accessibility in equal measures." [12] Pettigrew finished with saying "Watch them make good on their promise." [12] Amy Sciarretto of Outburn rated the album a nine out of a ten, stating that the release "is a full-bodied, dramatic, and richly textured collection of songs that remind us of the Chiodos we knew and love in the late 00s", and that the album has "so much going on with every track on Devil that you will emerge from the listening experience exhausted but enriched." [14] At The Oakland Press , Gary Graff rated the album three stars out of four, saying that "Chiodos is back as it should be and rocking with its characteristic blast-furnace, angst-fueled intensity." [13] Gregory Heaney of AllMusic rated the album three-and-a-half stars out of five, remarking that the release "sees them continuing to move forward again, and although Hale's presence will certainly be missed, fans of the band will find that the return of Frost and Owens more than makes up for the loss." [11]

Chiodos is an American post-hardcore band from Davison, Michigan. Formed in 2001, the group was originally known as “The Light-hearted Carpet Knights” before changing their name to "The Chiodos Bros," the band's name was a tribute to filmmakers Stephen, Charles, and Edward Chiodo, responsible for the film Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Chiodos released their first full-length album, titled All's Well That Ends Well, on July 26, 2005. Their second album, Bone Palace Ballet, was released in North America on September 4, 2007 and debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Independent Albums. Warner Bros. Records released Bone Palace Ballet on January 26, 2009, as part of a new distribution deal in the UK. They released their third studio album, Illuminaudio in 2010, and it was the only studio album to feature Brandon Bolmer as lead vocalist and Tanner Wayne as drummer. The band released their fourth and final album, Devil on April 1, 2014, which marked the return of original vocalist Craig Owens and drummer Derrick Frost.

All's Well That Ends Well is the debut album by American post-hardcore band Chiodos, released through Equal Vision Records in July 2005. Four music videos for the songs "One Day All Women Will Become Monsters", "The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined", "Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on the Creek", and "All Nereids Beware" have been produced for the promotion of the album. The album has sold more than 200,000 copies as of 2008.

Clinton Bradley David Bell, known professionally as Bradley Bell, is an American keyboardist, pianist, synthesist, and backing vocalist, best known for being the keyboardist of post-hardcore band Chiodos, and also for being the keyboardist of pop punk band Cinematic Sunrise until their demise, and the keyboardist of experimental band The Sound of Animals Fighting. He was also in a pop punk band called Still No Sign, where he was the lead vocalist. Chiodos guitarist Pat McManaman was also in this band.

Illuminaudio is the first and only studio album from the band with vocalist Brandon Bolmer, formerly of Yesterdays Rising, after the departure of Craig Owens. Owens would return to the band in 2012, replacing Bolmer. This is also the first and only album with drummer Tanner Wayne, formerly of Underminded. He would leave the band in 2012, to be replaced by former drummer Derrick Frost. This is also the last album with original guitarist Jason Hale.
