Dhenkanal College, officially Dhenkanal Autonomous College, is an autonomous college located at Dhenkanal, Odisha, India. [1] It Provides undergraduate and post-graduate programs in commerce, sciences and liberal arts. It is affiliated to Utkal University.

History

Dhenkanal Autonomous College was established in 1959 and was granted autonomous status in 2002. [2] After the UGC facing the possible loss of autonomy in 2019, [2] the UGC granted the institute an extension of the status until 2023. [3]

Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang was established in the year of 1982 and was managed directly by the Govt. of Odisha in the name of Odisha College of Engineering (OCE). Prior to this, since 1981, the institute in the name of Modern Polytechnic (MPT) was offering Diploma Courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining Survey Engineering. In the year 1987, both OCE & MPT were merged and renamed as IGIT, Sarang and the management was transferred to an Autonomous Society. Presently, the Institute is offering nine Under Graduate Engineering courses in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer Science Engg., Production Engg., Architecture; & two part-time Post Graduate Engg courses in Industrial Power Control & Drives, Environmental Sc. &Engg.; nine full time Post Graduate Engg courses / Master course Computer Sc.Engg., Electronics and Telecom. Vyasanagar College, Jajpur Road, Jajpur, Odisha is the 29th Autonomous college of Odisha. The autonomous status was granted in February 2009, renewed on 2016 by University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.

The higher education system in India includes both private and public universities. Public universities are supported by the Government of India and the state governments, while private universities are mostly supported by various bodies and societies. Universities in India are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In addition, 15 Professional Councils are established, controlling different aspects of accreditation and coordination. Private universities in India are regulated under the UGC Regulations, 2003. Per the UGC act and these regulations, private universities are established by an act of a local legislative assembly and listed by the UGC in the Gazette upon receiving the act. As confirmed by ruling of the Supreme Court of India, recognition by the UGC is required for the university to operate. Also, per the 2003 regulations, the UGC sends committees to inspect the private universities and publishes their inspection report.
