Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), formerly Burla Medical College and Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital, is a public medical college and hospital in Sambalpur, Odisha, India. Established in 1959, it imparts medical education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The Campus of Veer Surendra Sai Medical College & Hospital is situated in Sambalpur, Odisha, about 330 kilometres North West of the state capital Bhubaneswar. [1]
In 1958, to provide a solution to healthcare problems in western Odisha, the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Harekrushna Mahatab, took the decision to set up a medical college at Burla, the second in the state and the 54th in the country. Consequently, the Burla Medical College (BMC) came into existence in July, 1959, with 41 male and 9 female students selected from SCB Medical College in Cuttack to become its first batch of students. The college started to function in the present Old College Building (OCB), under the guidance of Radhanath Mishra as its first principal. Initially, the Medical Council of India (MCI) refused to recognize BMC, citing gross infrastructural inadequacy. So, a new sprawling campus was designed, complete with the main college building, the hospital building, hostels and staff quarters. Construction began on 12 February 1961. On completion of the work in 1966, the college was moved to the new campus and it finally received MCI approval in 1967. In 1969, it was rechristened Veer Surendra Sai Medical College in honor of Veer Surendra Sai. [2]
VSS Medical College offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of medical science as well as other paramedical courses.
The college offers the four and a half year MBBS course with a one-year compulsory rotating internship in affiliated hospitals to a maximum of 200 students per year. Admission to this course is on the basis of merit. Out of the 200, 30 seats are filled through the AIQ (All India Quota) of NEET exam conducted by the NTA and the remaining 170 seats are filled through the same exam by OJEE. The acceptance rate to this course is 0.2% (1 in every 500 aspirants).[ citation needed ]
The college offers 74 places in postgraduate courses. The admission is through Odisha Post Graduate medical Examination and at the national level through All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE). 50% of the places are reserved for in-service candidates. The courses award the degrees of MD or MS, in various fields.
The college also offers diploma studies in various paramedical fields.
Students are represented by an undergraduate students’ union, elected annually by a campus-wide election from the students of the fourth year in March–April. The office holders of the students’ union organise various programmes, activities and inter-class competitions throughout the year which culminates with the annual function of the union in December. Postgraduate students are represented by a similar union, known as the Junior Doctors’ Association.
The inter-medical college festival, "Euphoria", is organized every three years. A large number of students gather for a four-day extravaganza and participate in various cultural, dramatic, literary and sports competitions.
"PRAYAS" is a non-profit organization formed by the students which strives to provide proper medical treatment to financially challenged persons by providing free medicines and also to create a large pool of donors to counter the perennial shortage of blood units in the hospital's blood bank.
Burla is a locality in Sambalpur city in the state of Odisha, India. It earlier had a Notified Area Council (NAC) until 2014 after which it was included in Sambalpur city under Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC). It was earlier a small town on the banks of Mahanadi. One can reach this place by road with National Highway 6 which is one of the busiest trunk routes in India as it connects Hazira to Kolkata. Hirakud Railway Station is at one end of the town and a walking distance from the Mahanadi Coal Limited (MCL).

Established in 1956, it is the oldest engineering college in Odisha. UCE Burla, its former name, was officially changed to its current name on 10 June 2009, as a result of a resolution by the Government of Odisha to accord it with the status of a unitary university.

North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is a medical institute of India in Shillong, Meghalaya. It is located on the outskirts of the educational hub hills City of the Northeastern India, Shillong, the "Scotland of the East". The present full-fledged tertiary care hospital facilities started at its permanent campus at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong in the year 2007. Besides, there is B. Sc Nursing and M. Sc Nursing courses being run by the Institute's College of Nursing.The College of Nursing started its courses from the year 2006.
Veer Surendra Sai was a native Indian as well as a regional freedom fighter from what is now Odisha. He fought against the British rule in India after they dethroned the king and queen of Sambalpur State as he was the legal heir. Veer Surendra Sai and his associates Madho Singh, Kunjal Singh, Airi Singh, Bairi Singh, Uddant Sai, Ujjal Sai, Khageswar Dao, Karunakar Singh, Salegram Bariha, Govind Singh, Pahar Singh, Rajee Ghasia, Kamal Singh, Hati Singh, Salik Ram Bariha, Loknath Panda/Gadtia, Mrutunjaya Panigrahi, Jagabandu Hota, Padmanabha Guru, Trilochan Panigrahi, and many others worked together and separately to counter British colonial expansion in India, preventing the British authorities from assuming control over the majority of Western Odisha region for a significant period of time. Many of them were tried and executed by the colonial authorities; Hatte Singh died at the Kalapani Jail in the Andamans. Lion of Sambalpur Veer Surendra Sai died in Asirgarh Jail on 28 February 1884.
North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMC&H) is located in Sushrutanagar, on the outskirts of Siliguri, West Bengal, India. Dr. Krishna Mohan Pathi is an Indian orthopedic surgeon from Odisha, India, who is known for his work in Odisha's tribal areas. He treats the poor for free of cost. He is the founder of Bharadwaj Gurukul Ashram, a charitable organization that helps the poor and needy with medical treatment for the last three decades, as of 2021. On January 26, 2021, the Government of India conferred him India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri.
