Dichaon Kalan is a city in Delhi, India, founded in the 13th century. It is located in the Najafgarh tehsil of the South West Delhi district. [1] Dichaon Khurd (see Khurd and Kalan) is located nearby. The population speak Haryanvi.[ citation needed ]

History

The village is declared a Model Village. The old timers relate this with its so called real name- Dev Uvach which means, from the mouth of Gods. The village has been in the news due to its musclemen. It looks like a prosperous village as the presence of the neo-riches is dominant. Further, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other agencies have been involved in taking up a number of projects around this village. [2]

Starting in 1992, Dichaon Kalan and its neighbouring village Mitraon (or Mitraun) became a battleground for criminal gangs operating out of Delhi. [3] [4] [5]

Dichaon Kalan is the stronghold of Krishan Pehlawan gang, while Mitraun was the stronghold of its rival Anoop-Balraj gang. Annop and Balraj were sons of Surat Kane, a well-known gangster of the 1990s. When Kane tried to grab a piece of land from the local landlord Balwan Fauji, the latter hired Krishan Pahalwan to fight with Kane's gang. [6] Balraj and Krishan were once friends, but a property dispute led to a bitter conflict between the two, in which a number of people lost their lives. The roots of the conflict go to 1992, when Krishan Pahalwan of Dichaon Kalan and Anoop-Balraj gang of Mitraon fought over a civic contract. [4] After committing a murder to avenge the killing of his uncle Rohtash, Pahalwan was arrested in 1992, but released five years later. During his stay in the prison, he formed a criminal gang. [7]

As property rates in the NCR region rose, criminals from both the villages entered into the business of property dealing and tender grabbing. [4] Pahalwan became close to Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the ruling party in the neighbouring state of Haryana. Between 1996 and 1998, when a prohibition was in effect in Haryana, Pahalwan bootlegging business made him rich and powerful. Subsequently, Pahalwan started eliminating his rivals. Pahalwan's gang killed Balraj in 1998. Pahalwan was arrested that year, but released. [8] Balraj's brother Anoop tried to reach a compromise with Pahalwan's gang, but was unsuccessful. [6] He then started killing Pahalwan's men, and Pahalwan fled to Australia. [8] In September 1999, Anoop's gang shot dead Pahalwan's 22-year old brother Kuldeep. In retaliation, Anoop's 19-year old nephew Yash Pal was killed by Pahalwan's gang on the same day. [6] Pahalwan returned to India in 2003, and was arrested by the Delhi police before being released. Anoop's henchmen made several attempts to kill him. In 2004, Pahalwan's gang killed Anoop and two police officers as Anoop was being brought to a Rohtak court. Subsequently, most of other members of the Anoop-Balraj gang were also killed. [7] [8]

Krishan Pahalwan then entered politics. In 2007, his brother Bharat Singh won the municipal polls from the Dichaon Kalan ward, and became a councillor. [9] In 2008, Bharat Singh was elected as an INLD MLA to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Pahalwan then filled the seat vacated by his brother; his wife Neelam was also elected a councillor. [5] Pahalwan was arrested again in 2009; by this time, he had 27 murder cases against him. [7]

Neelam krishan phelwan is now the most POWERFULL politician in the area by winning three consecutive elections and now will contest for MLA elections in 2025 from bjp. Meanwhile, newer gangsters challenged Krishan-Bharat gang, in an attempt to control the extortion and property-related business in the area. One of these was the local criminal Udayveer alias Kaale, whose father and brother had allegedly been killed at the behest of Krishan Pahalwan. In 2012, Bharat Singh allegedly tried to grab a piece of land owned by the kin of another gangster Vicky. Subsequently, a group of eight gunmen tried to kill Bharat Singh in his office, but he escaped. The attack was allegedly ordered by Vicky and Kaale. [8] Singh lost a kidney and spent two months in the hospital. [4] Singh lost the 2013 Assembly election, and started focusing on his property business. In 2015, following a property dispute with Vikas Lagapuria, he was murdered by over six armed men. [8] Kaale and three others were arrested for the murder. [10]

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, Dichaon Kalan has a population of 27,255, including 14,553 males and 12,702 females. The village has 5172 households. The literacy rate of the village is 92.48%. [11]

Scheduled caste people comprise 9.37% of the village's population. [11]

Economy

Some of villagers are property dealers. 75% of the population of this village is involved in farming. They dedicate 9 to 10 months of a year to produce various types of cauliflower like Madhuri, Aganya etc. to fulfill almost 95% of the consumption of this vegetable in the city.

For more than 60 years the village sends fleets of trucks loaded with cauliflower everyday to the wholesale markets or mandis. This village grows 98% of total cauliflower in Delhi. This has earned the village the name "Gobhi Wala Gaon" (India's cauliflower village). [12]

Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an Indian politician and former member of Legislative Assembly belonging to the Bhartiya Janta Party from Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh who has been convicted of rape, murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation. He is the main defendant in the Unnao rape case and was booked under the POCSO Act. He is also accused of killing three people, including the victim's father in police custody and later her aunts by a conspired truck accident. A Delhi District and Sessions Court upheld an investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that had ruled out any foul play in the Unnao rape survivor's accident in 2019.

The criminal Ashok Mahto gang, which was active in the Indian state Bihar, was led by Ashok Mahto and included Pintu Mahto. Ashok Mahto and his gang were responsible for the 2005 killing of Rajo Singh, a sitting Member of Parliament. Ashok Mahto was imprisoned but escaped from Nawada jail in 2002. Pintu Mahto killed three police officers during the prison breakout. The gang's leaders are said to belong to either the Kurmi or Koeri caste, and were supported by the backward castes in the Nawada and Sheikhpura regions. The Mahto gang was waging a war of retribution against the exploitative upper-caste Bhumihars. Mahto and his gang were responsible for the killings of a large number of Forward Caste people in the late 1990s.

Anjali Singh was a 20-year-old Indian woman who was killed in a road traffic collision in Delhi on January 1, 2023. It is also known as the 2023 Delhi hit-and-run case, or the Kanjhawala case. Anjali was driving a scooter that was hit by a motorist. Her leg got stuck in the car's axle and she was dragged by the car for several kilometres, eventually resulting in her death. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. There were subsequently public protests against the central government for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in Delhi.

Khalid Azim, also known as Ashraf, was an Indian politician who had a criminal background. He served as a Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Prayagraj West constituency. He faced 54 criminal cases, including murder, threats, extortion, abduction, and land grabbing offenses under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
