Dilan Kumar Markanday (born 20 August 2001) is an English professional footballer who plays as a winger for EFL Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Career

Tottenham Hotspur

Markanday is a youth academy graduate of Tottenham Hotspur. On 19 January 2021, he extended his contract with the club until June 2022. [2] He made his professional debut on 21 October 2021, in a 1–0 UEFA Europa Conference League away defeat against Vitesse. [3] In doing so, he became the first British Asian, as well as the first player of Indian descent, to appear for Tottenham's men's first team in a competitive match. [4]

Blackburn Rovers

On 18 January 2022, EFL Championship club Blackburn Rovers announced the signing of Markanday on a three-and-a-half-year deal, with an option to extend for twelve months. [5] He scored his first goal for the club on 10 August 2022 in a 4–0 EFL Cup win over Hartlepool United. [6]

On 31 January 2023, Markanday joined Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen on a loan deal until the end of the season. [7]

Markanday scored his first goal in English League football and also Blackburn's first goal of the season in the 20th minute of their 2–1 win over West Bromwich Albion on 5 August 2023. [8]

Personal life

He was born as Dilan Kumar Markanday on August 21, 2001, to Indian parents Deepa and Arun Markanday at Barnet in London, England. At the age of 15 in 2017, Markanday joined the youth system of the London-based club, Tottenham Hotspur. [9] He attended the Haberdashers’ Boys' School in Elstree. [10]

The 2016–17 season was the 137th season of competitive association football in England.

The 2017–18 FA Cup was the 137th edition of the oldest recognised football tournament in the world. It was sponsored by Emirates, and known as The Emirates FA Cup for sponsorship purposes. 737 clubs were accepted into the tournament. They finished fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for next season's Champions League, and were eliminated by Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Tottenham made it to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup where they faced Chelsea. After two legs the aggregate score was 2–2 and Spurs were eliminated 4–2 on penalties. However, after overcoming Ajax on away goals after two very dramatic legs in the semi-finals, Tottenham reached the Champions League final for the first time in the club's history. In an all-English affair, Tottenham lost 0–2 to Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. Notably, this was the first time in Premier League history where a team made no signings during either transfer window.

The 2020–21 Leicester City F.C. season was the club's 116th season in existence and the seventh consecutive season in the top flight of English football. In addition to the domestic league, Leicester City participated in the season's editions of the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League. The season covers the period from 27 July 2020 to 30 June 2021.

The 2021–22 season was Tottenham Hotspur's 30th season in the Premier League, 44th successive season in the top division of the English football league system and 116th season in existence. After finishing seventh in the 2020–21 Premier League, Tottenham qualified for the play-off round of the newly formed UEFA Europa Conference League. At the end of June, the club announced Nuno Espírito Santo as the new head coach on a two-year contract. However, Tottenham announced that they had removed Nuno, along with his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias, stating they had been "relieved of their duties" on 1 November 2021. Antonio Conte was appointed as Nuno's successor the following day.

The 2021–22 season was the 120th season in the existence of Brighton & Hove Albion and the club's fifth consecutive season in the top flight of English football. In addition to the domestic league, Brighton & Hove Albion participated in this season's edition of the FA Cup and in the EFL Cup, where they exited both competitions in the fourth round. Brighton finished the season in ninth, their highest ever finish in the top flight.
