Dipak Chatterjee is a fictional detective character created by Bengali writer Samarendranath Pandey under his pen name Swapan Kumar. [2] The series of his stories were well known in the sub altern culture of Kolkata [3] and most popular pulp fiction to readers of Bengali literature. [4] [5]

Character

The first story of Dipak Chatterjee, Adrishya Sanket, was published in 1953. Dipak is a private investigator of Kolkata, British India. The police often seek help from him. Adventurous Dipak even goes abroad for solving cases. He can use revolvers with both hands and is an expert in martial arts. Dipak has profound scientific knowledge and has set up a laboratory in his house to carry out scientific experiments. His assistant, Ratanlal, usually accompanies him. [6] Most of the stories are set in colonial Bengal. [7] [8] A total of 20 series of Dipak Chatterjee stories were published over three decades. [9]

Byomkesh Bakshi is an Indian-Bengali fictional detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Referring to himself as a "truth-seeker" or Satyanweshi in the stories, Bakshi is known for his proficiency with observation, logical reasoning, and forensic science which he uses to solve complicated cases, usually murders, occurring in Calcutta. According to chronological order, Byomkesh Bakshi appeared for the first time in the story "Pother Kanta” — a story where Byomkesh shows that an assumption based on pure and simple logic is unbreakable and when we break down what is known in law as circumstantial evidence, there is nothing but logical assumptions. However his proper introduction is given in his third story, "Satyanweshi" — a story of murder dealing with illegal trafficking of cocaine. He appears in alias — under the pseudonym of Atul Chandra Mitra. It is here that Byomkesh meets Ajit Bandyopadhyay, a writer, who would become a constant companion of him and it is Ajit who narrates the Byomkesh stories.

Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay was an Indian Bengali-language writer. He was actively involved with Bengali cinema as well as Bollywood. The creator of the Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi, Sharadindu composed stories of a wide array of varieties including: novels, short stories, crime and detective stories, plays and screenplays. He wrote historical fiction like Kaler Mandira, Gourmollar, Tumi Sandhyar Megh, Tungabhadrar Teere, Chuya-Chandan, Maru O Sangha, Sadashib series and stories of the unnatural with the recurring character Baroda. Besides, he composed many songs and poems.

Bengali literature denotes the body of writings in the Bengali language and which covers Old Bengali, Middle- Bengali and Modern Bengali with the changes through the passage of time and dynastic patronization or non-patronization. Bengali has developed over the course of roughly 1,300 years. If the emergence of the Bengali literature supposes to date back to roughly 650 AD, the development of Bengali literature claims to be 1600 years old. The earliest extant work in Bengali literature is the Charyapada, a collection of Buddhist mystic songs in Old Bengali dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries. The timeline of Bengali literature is divided into three periods: ancient (650–1200), medieval (1200–1800) and modern. Medieval Bengali literature consists of various poetic genres, including Hindu religious scriptures, Islamic epics, Vaishnava texts, translations of Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit texts, and secular texts by Muslim poets. Meghe Dhaka Tara is a 2013 Indian Bengali film directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee and made under Shree Venkatesh Films banners. The film is inspired from the life and works of Bengali film director Ritwik Ghatak. The entire film is in black and white except the last scene which has been shot in colour. In this film Saswata Chatterjee plays the character of Nilkantha Bagchi and Ananya Chatterjee plays the role of Durga, Nilkantha's wife. The film was released on 14 June 2013. Besides giving an account of Ghatak's life, the film also depicts the socio-political environment of contemporary West Bengal during the Tebhaga and Naxalite movements.

Feluda is an Indian-Bengali detective media franchise created by Indian-Bengali film director and writer Satyajit Ray, featuring the character, Feluda. The titular character is a private investigator starring in a series of Bengali novels and short stories. The detective resides at 21 Rajani Sen Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Feluda first made his appearance in a Bengali children's magazine called Sandesh (সন্দেশ) in 1965, under the editorialship of Satyajit and Subhas Mukhopadhyay. <i>Badshahi Angti</i> (film) 2014 film by Sandip Ray

Badshahi Angti is a 2014 Indian Bengali-language thriller film directed by Sandip Ray, based on the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray, starring Abir Chatterjee and Sourav Das as Feluda and Topse respectively. The film was released on 19 December 2014. It is the first film which stars Abir Chatterjee as Feluda. This was going to be a reboot to previous Feluda film series after Royal Bengal Rahashya. But in 2016 Sandip Ray cancelled the reboot series because Abir Chatterjee started a new version of film series based on Byomkesh Bakshi franchise under Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films. The other reason was the new Feluda movie Sandip Ray intended to make under a Mumbai-based production house Eros International, but Abir has a strict contract with Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films.

<i>Double Feluda</i> 2016 film directed by Sandip Ray

Double Feluda is a 2016 Bengali language crime thriller detective film, based on the Bengali sleuth Feluda, created by the acclaimed and renowned Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray. It is the 19th film in the Feluda series. Directed by his son Sandip Ray, the film marks the comeback of both Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Saheb Bhattacharya, with the former returning to the eponymous role of Feluda and the latter playing his sidekick. This is a sequel of Royal Bengal Rahashya (2011). The film released on 16 December 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic creation. The film is based on two Feluda stories - Samaddarer Chabi and Golokdham Rahasya.

Ishaa Saha is an Indian actress who mainly works in Bengali cinema. She started her career with Bengali television. She made her film debut in Bengali cinema in 2017 as a lead with Projapoti Biskut directed by Anindya Chatterjee. She acted in all the films directed by filmmaker Dhrubo Banerjee.

Maayakumari is a 2023 Indian Bengali language film directed by Arindam Sil. It stars Rituparna Sengupta, Sauraseni Maitra, Ambarish Bhattacharya, Abir Chatterjee and Rajatabha Dutta. The music was composed by Bickram Ghosh. It was theatrically released on 13 January 2023.

Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole is a 2024 Indian Bengali language satirical action comedy film directed by Debaloy Bhattacharya, and produced by Hoichoi Studios. It is based on the adventures of Dipak Chatterjee, a fictional detective lost in time. The movie released to positive reviews from the critics.
