Abir Chatterjee (born 18 November 1980) is an Indian actor who mainly works in Bengali cinema. He is the son of theatre personalities Phalguni Chatterjee and Rumki Chatterjee. [1] He started his career with Bengali television and made his debut in Bengali cinema in 2009 as a lead with Cross Connection . He is well known for appearing as famous Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in a separate movie series.

Early life and education

He is the son of theatre artists Phalguni Chatterjee and Rumki Chatterjee. [1] He attended Laban Hrad Vidyapith. [2] He then attended Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College for his plus 2. [3] He was granted his B.Com degree from the Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration and his MBA degree from the ICFAI University , Kolkata branch. [4]

Personal life

Chatterjee is married to Nandini Chatterjee, his college friend in 2007. The couple has a daughter named Mayurakshi Chatterjee. He is an avid East Bengal fan. [5]

Career

He has acted in many Bengali serials including Proloy..asche [6] Ruposhi Bangla , Shasuri Zindabad, Khuje Berai Kacher Manush, Banhishikha, Sudhu Tomari Jonno, Somoy, Ek Akasher Niche, and Janmobhumi. [7] [8] [9]

He has appeared in Bengali movies as Byomkesh Bakshi and Feluda. [10] The Indian Express said he brought "elegant élan and confidence" to his role in The Royal Bengal Tiger . [11]

Abir has appeared as Byomkesh Bakshi in two different series, one helmed by Anjan Dutt and the other by Arindam Sil. He appeared as Feluda in the 2014 film Badshahi Angti. [12]

Abir Chatterjee's great lost film is his screen debut in the 2004 independent period drama Robibar Bikelbela, in which he portrays a disillusioned former Naxalite revolutionary in post-Emergency Bengal. [13] No copies of the film have been found yet.

2014 saw his emergence in a solo leading role in the critically acclaimed film Hrid Majharey by debutant director Ranjan Ghosh. [14] [15] [16] After acting in this film, he went on to top the list of Calcutta Times Most Desirable Men of 2014 and 2019. [17] Since 2020, he hosts Zee Bangla Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

In 2018 Abir worked in Flat No 609 as a lead role. [18] In 2022, he debuted in the Hindi industry with Season 2 of the SonyLIV original Avrodh . [19]

Referring to himself as a "truth-seeker" or Satyanweshi in the stories, Bakshi is known for his proficiency with observation, logical reasoning, and forensic science which he uses to solve complicated cases, usually murders, occurring in Calcutta. According to chronological order, Byomkesh Bakshi appeared for the first time in the story "Pother Kanta” — a story where Byomkesh shows that an assumption based on pure and simple logic is unbreakable and when we break down what is known in law as circumstantial evidence, there is nothing but logical assumptions. However his proper introduction is given in his third story, "Satyanweshi" — a story of murder dealing with illegal trafficking of cocaine. He appears in alias — under the pseudonym of Atul Chandra Mitra. It is here that Byomkesh meets Ajit Bandyopadhyay, a writer, who would become a constant companion of him and it is Ajit who narrates the Byomkesh stories.

Jisshu Sengupta is an Indian actor, producer, television presenter, who predominantly works in Bengali films, and also in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil films. Sengupta made his debut through a Bengali TV series, Mahaprabhu (1996) where he portrayed the role of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu; the role gained him much recognition. Subsequently, he made his film debut with Priyojon (1999), which became a debacle at the box office. Badshahi Angti is a 2014 Indian Bengali-language thriller film directed by Sandip Ray, based on the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray, starring Abir Chatterjee and Sourav Das as Feluda and Topse respectively. The film was released on 19 December 2014. It is the first film which stars Abir Chatterjee as Feluda. This was going to be a reboot to previous Feluda film series after Royal Bengal Rahashya. But in 2016 Sandip Ray cancelled the reboot series because Abir Chatterjee started a new version of film series based on Byomkesh Bakshi franchise under Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films. The other reason was the new Feluda movie Sandip Ray intended to make under a Mumbai-based production house Eros International, but Abir has a strict contract with Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films.

<i>Double Feluda</i> 2016 film directed by Sandip Ray

Double Feluda is a 2016 Bengali language crime thriller detective film, based on the Bengali sleuth Feluda, created by the acclaimed and renowned Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray. It is the 19th film in the Feluda series. Directed by his son Sandip Ray, the film marks the comeback of both Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Saheb Bhattacharya, with the former returning to the eponymous role of Feluda and the latter playing his sidekick. This is a sequel of Royal Bengal Rahashya (2011). The film released on 16 December 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic creation. The film is based on two Feluda stories - Samaddarer Chabi and Golokdham Rahasya.

Sujan Mukherjee is an Indian actor who works in Bengali language films, television and theatre. In 2012 he made his directorial debut with the film Ghete Gho. He is an active Member of the renowned Theatre Group Chetana. On 22 February 2016 his directorial debut, in the field of Theatre, Ghashiram Kotwal, which is an adaptation on Marathi play, was premiered. In 2018 he directed Don: Taake Bhalo Laage an adaptation of Dale Wasserman's Don Quixote which was translated into Bengali by Arun Mukhopadhyay many years back. This play marked the re-entry of Suman Mukhopadhyay as an actor after 25 years.
