Mukherjee was born in Kolkata. He lost his father in an early age. He was admitted in Sarsuna High School from where he passed Madhyamik examination. He passed Higher Secondary Examination from New Alipore Multipurpose High School. He graduated from the Asutosh College, a University of Calcutta affiliate. [2]
Mukherjee is mainly knowns as a stage actor. Ramaprasad Banik and Chandan Sen taught him acting. [2] He is currently the General Secretary of "West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum" [3] since 2022. His son is Rwitobroto Mukherjee who is also an actor, working primarily in films, web series and stage.
Kakababu is a fictional character created by Bengali author Sunil Gangopadhyay. The series, falling under the adventure genre of literature, targeted at children and teenagers, started in the autumn of 1971 with the publication of Bhoyonkor Sundor in Anandamela magazine, Puja issue. Since then, the series continued for 33 years on popular demand, with over 36 adventure novels in print until the death of the author in 2012.

His first acting assignment was in the play Khudha, and his first film was Mrinal Sen's 1958 film Neel Akasher Neechey. He had worked with directors like Satyajit Ray and Ronand Joffy. He is remembered for his portrayal of Machhli Baba in 1979 film Joi Baba Felunath.

Goyenda Tatar is a Bengali adventure detective film directed by Srikanta Galui and produced by Binod Kumar Pandey and Usha Pande. Music is composed by Anirban Ray Akash. The storyline of the film is based on the story, Chotur Goyenda Choturabhijan, of Sasthipada Chattopathyay, and follows a group of kids led by Goenda Tatar. The film was released on 10 October 2021 coinciding with the Puja holidays. The film premiered on ZEE5 on 22 October 2021, 12 days after the release.
