Bibhash Chakraborty (alternatively spelt Bibhas Chakraborty; born 23 September 1937) is an Indian Bengali actor and theatre personality. [1] He is also a social activist. He is a prolific writer too. He was associated with Paschim Banga Natya Akademi for many years. [2]

Early life

Chakraborty was born on 23 September 1937 in Sylhet, British India (currently Bangladesh). He used to stay near the Burma border, and his childhood years were affected by the worries of a possible Japanese attack during World War II. [1]

Career

In the beginning of acting career, Bibhash Chakraborty joined Bohurupee, however his sting with Bohurupee was disappointing. [1] In 1960s he joined the Bengali theatre group Nandikar. In Nandikar, he acted in several plays directed by Ajitesh Bandopadhyay. [1] He left Nandikar in 1966 and formed "Theatre Workshop". During these days, he directed several plays such as Rajrakta (written by Mohit Chattopadhyay), Chakbhanga Modhu (written by Manoj Mitra) etc. [3] The drama Rajarakta was a very significant one in the history of Bengali theatre. [4]

In 1985, he formed a Bengali theatre group "Anya Theatre". [5] [6]

Chakraborty was associated with Paschim Banga Natya Akademi for many years as a member, almost from the institution's inception. In 2018 he resigned from the institution citing age reason. [7]

Khaled Choudhury was a theatre personality and artist of Bengal. He worked for various directors of both Bengali and Hindi plays, including Sombhu Mitra, Tripti Mitra, and Shyamanand Jalan in various capacities — creating the Stage, sets and costumes and later as music director. He was a bachelor. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to theatre in India's Republic Day Honours List on 26 January 2012. He died on 30 April 2014 in Kolkata.

Paschim Banga Natya Akademi is a learned society for drama and theatre in West Bengal, India. Established on 26 September 1987, it is a wing of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal. The aim of this society is to develop skill and expertise, to document and archive the history of theater of Bengal, to disseminate information, to understand theories, to promote and project significant creativity in the field.

Tripti Mitra was a popular Indian actress of Bengali theatre and films, and wife of Sombhu Mitra, noted theatre director, with whom she co-founded pioneering theatre group Bohurupee in 1948. She has acted in films like Jukti Takko Aar Gappo and Dharti Ke Lal.

Sohini Sengupta is an Indian film and theatre actress. Daughter of actor Rudraprasad Sengupta and Swatilekha Sengupta, who are also active in theatre, Sohini is one of the leading actors of the Bengali theatre group Nandikar. As a member of the group, she has worked with prominent theatre personalities such as Debshankar Halder, Sumanto Gangopadhyay and Parthapratim Deb, and was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi's 2007 Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for contributions to theatre. She also played a supporting role in Aparna Sen’s film Paromitar Ek Din (2000) for which she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2000 National Film Awards.
