The director of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China is the head of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China and a member of the State Council. Within the State Council, the position is seventh in order of precedence. The director is responsible for leading the commission, presiding over its meetings, and signing important documents related to the commission. Officially, the director is nominated by the premier of the State Council, who is then approved by the National People's Congress or its Standing Committee and appointed by the president. [1]

The current director is Pan Yue, who concurrently serves as the Chinese Communist Party Committee Secretary of the commission.

History

Between 1954 and 2020, the director of the commission was led by an ethnic minority, including Hui, Uyghurs, Korean and Mongols. In 2020, Chen Xiaojiang, a member of the country's Han ethnic manjority, was appointed as the director, becoming the first Han director since 1954. [2]
