Donny White (November 7, 1942 - August 17, 2021) was an American college athletics administrator and coach. He was the athletic director at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), a position he held since 1998. White announced his retirement on May 13, 2013. [1] He had also been active as a coach at the school, and had been a cadet-athlete at VMI.
White played college football and college baseball at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) located in Lexington, Virginia. He co-captained the 1964 football team and was selected All-Southern Conference in baseball for three consecutive years as a shortstop. He was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
White was named the head baseball coach at VMI in 1982 and led the program for six years. In 1982, he was named Southern Conference Co-Coach of the Year for his efforts with the program. [2]
White was the interim head football coach for the final game of the 1998 season, finishing out the season after previous head coach Ted Cain was relieved of his duties after a 1–9 start for the season, [3] [4]
Thomas N. Nugent was an American college football coach and innovator, sportscaster, public relations man. He served as the head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute, Florida State University, and the University of Maryland. His career record was 89–80–3. Nugent is credited with the development of the I formation.
Robert Franklin "Duggar" Baucom is an American college basketball coach, most recently the head men's basketball coach at The Citadel. Baucom was hired as the Citadel's head coach following the 2014–15 season. He was previously the head coach at Virginia Military Institute. He's also served a coach at Tusculum, Davidson, Western Carolina and Northwestern State.
Blandy Benjamin Clarkson was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He was the 16th head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, serving for seven seasons, from 1920 to 1926, and compiling a record of 44–21–2. Clarkson was also the longest tenured athletic director in VMI history, having served from 1926 to 1946. Prior to his time at VMI, Clarkson served as head coach at the Marion Military Institute from 1914 -1916 and again in 1919.
Ted Cain is a former American football coach who coached in the college football ranks for over 30 years. He is the former offensive coordinator, former special teams coordinator, and former tight-ends coach at Vanderbilt. He was at Vanderbilt as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for nine years under head coach Bobby Johnson whom he followed to Vanderbilt from Furman, his alma mater, and later as tight-ends coach and special teams coordinator under head coach Robbie Caldwell. He coached standouts Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett, both of whom were voted All-SEC during their time in Nashville. Cain started his career in 1977 at Furman and remained there until the 1986 season, where he took over as NC State's offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. He served as offensive coordinator until the 1997 season, when he was hired as the head football coach at Virginia Military Institute (VMI).
Cal McCombs is a former American football player and coach. He was the 29th head football coach for the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, serving for seven seasons, from 1999 to 2005, compiling a record of 19–60. He lives in Isle of Palms, South Carolina with his wife Lynne.
Tom Clark is an American football coach. He is the offensive coordinator for Shepherd University, a position he has held since 2023. Clark served for nine non-consecutive seasons as the head football coach at Catholic University of America, where he compiled a 58–32–1 record and a .643 winning percentage. Clark was the defensive coordinator at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) from 2015 to 2021.
The VMI Keydets football team represents the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Keydets compete in the Southern Conference of the NCAA Division I FCS, and are coached by Danny Rocco, named head coach on December 3, 2022. VMI plays their home contests at 10,000-seat Alumni Memorial Field, as they have since 1962.
The William & Mary Tribe are a college football team representing the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. William & Mary competes in CAA Football, a single-sport NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision conference operated by the Tribe's primary athletic home of the Coastal Athletic Association. The VMI Keydets are the athletic teams that represent the Virginia Military Institute. All sports participate in the NCAA Division I, and all but three compete in the Southern Conference (the exceptions being men's and women's swimming and diving in the America East Conference, and women's water polo in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. VMI fields teams in sixteen different sports, ten for men and six for women.
Chris Finwood is an American baseball coach and former shortstop, who is the current head baseball coach of the Old Dominion Monarchs. He played college baseball at the Virginia Military Institute for coaches Donny White and Paul Maini from 1985 to 1988. He then served as the head coach of the VMI Keydets (1992–1994) and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (2006–2011). Finwood has coached 61 players who were selected in the MLB Players Draft including 3 major leaguers.
The 1998 VMI Keydets football team represented the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) as a member of the Southern Conference (SOCON) during the 1998 NCAA Division I-AA football season. It was the Keydets' 108th year of football and second season under head coach Ted Cain, who was replaced by interim head coach Donny White after a 1–9 start. VMI ended the season 1–10 with its sole victory over Lenoir–Rhyne.
Wesley "Bart" Bellairs is an American former college basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He worked at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) for fourteen years, including 11 season head coach of VMI Keydets basketball team, from 1994 to 2005. After three years of serving as the school's senior associate athletic director, Bellairs was the athletic director at Savannah State University from 2008 to 2009 and Southeastern Louisiana University from 2009 to 2013. He also coached baseball and cross country.
Gary Dan McPherson was an American college basketball coach. A native of Cass, West Virginia, McPherson led the VMI Keydets for five seasons before working as a West Virginia men's basketball coach for twenty years. He was also the head coach for the Alderson Broaddus Battlers in nearby Philippi for two seasons.
Louis F. "Weenie" Miller was an American college basketball coach, athletic director, and sportcaster. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Miller endured a nine-year head coaching career with Hampden–Sydney College, Washington & Lee University, and, most notably, the Virginia Military Institute, where he led the Keydets to the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in 1964.
Joseph Cantafio is an American retired college basketball coach. Cantafio spent a total of eleven seasons as a head coach, with the Virginia Military Institute (1986–1994) and Furman University (1994–1997). A graduate of the University of Scranton, Cantafio is vice president of The Blewitt Foundation, an organization that supports military families, as well as an assistant director at the Center for Sports Leadershipfor for Virginia Commonwealth University. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Francis Lee Summers was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach. A 1922 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Summers played all three sports in his time as a cadet, as well as track. He was a member of the Keydets' 1920 football team known as the "Flying Squadron", the program's only undefeated and tie-free team. Summers served as athletic director for VMI and Hampden–Sydney College, as well as the Staunton Military Academy. He is a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
Dave Diles Jr. is the current athletic director at Lake Superior State University. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Diles previously served as director of athletics at Eastern Michigan, St. Bonaventure, Case Western Reserve University, and the Virginia Military Institute. He was also an administrative assistant for the University of Michigan in the late 1980s.
The 1997 VMI Keydets football team was an American football team that represented the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) during the 1997 NCAA Division I-AA football season. In first third year under head coach Ted Cain, the team compiled an overall record of 0–11, with a mark of 0–8 in conference play, placing last in the SoCon. In January 1997 Cain was introduced as the 27th all-time head coach of the Keydets after serving as offensive coordinator at NC State.
