Robert Cleckler Bowden was an American college football coach. Bowden coached the Florida State Seminoles of Florida State University (FSU) from 1976 to 2009 and is considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time for his accomplishments with the Seminoles.

He is a son of former Florida State University head football coach Bobby Bowden and a brother of Tommy Bowden, former head football coach at Clemson University, and Jeff Bowden, the former offensive coordinator at Florida State.
Scott Anthony Padgett is a retired American professional basketball player and current assistant to the head coach for Mississippi State men's basketball. He was formerly the head coach at Samford University. He played for the National Basketball Association's Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets, and Memphis Grizzlies.

Solomon Williams "Doc" Newton was a minor league baseball player as well as an American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Davidson College (1932–1935), North Carolina State University (1937–1943), the University of South Carolina (1944), and Guilford College (1945–1948), compiling a career college football record of 59–77–14. Newton was also the head baseball coach at Howard College, now Samford University in 1926 and 1930 and at North Carolina State from 1940 to 1944, tallying a career college baseball mark of 29–67–2.
Balpha Lonnie Noojin was an American sports coach, educator, politician, and businessman. Noojin completed his education at the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1908. At Alabama, Noojin was associate editor of the student newspaper and annual and a member of the university's baseball team. Along with these groups he was also member of the Alpha Kappa chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma social fraternity. Following graduation, he played baseball briefly for the Cincinnati Reds. Noojin then moved from baseball to education.

The Samford Bulldogs are the 17 varsity teams that represent Samford University in NCAA Division I athletics. The men's basketball team made its first NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999 and 2000.They were led by Reed Rawlings, Marc Salyers, and Chris Weaver. The women's basketball team made its initial NCAA tournament appearance in the 2011 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament and made its second consecutive appearance in the tournament in 2012. The baseball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance in the 2012 NCAA Division I baseball tournament, reaching the finals of the Tallahassee Regional. Additionally, the softball team made its first NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2016. For the first time in history, the Lady Bulldogs won the regular-season championship as well as the Tournament Championship to cap off a record high of 40 wins on the season. The school is a member of the Southern Conference in Division I of the NCAA, after moving from the Ohio Valley Conference in 2008. The Samford Athletics staff is headed by athletic director Martin Newton, whose appointment was announced on March 9, 2011.
Wendell Errol Magee, is a retired Major League Baseball player who played outfield from 1996–2002 for the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers. Magee also played for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League in 2004–2005.

Along with the majority of the university's other athletic teams, the baseball team became a member of the Mountain West Conference during the 1999–00 academic year. Previously, they competed in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aztecs play their home games at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the SDSU campus in San Diego, California. The team was coached by Tony Gwynn himself from 2003 until his death in 2014.

Raymond Elswood Davis was an American football player and coach of football and baseball. He was the head football and baseball coach at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute—now known as Louisiana Tech University—in 1939. Davis played college football at Howard College—now known as Samford University—in Homewood, Alabama. He played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) with the Portsmouth Spartans in 1932 and 1933. David returned to his alma mater, Howard, in 1934, where he served as line coach for the football team under head coaches Clyde Propst and Billy Bancroft.
Earl Lloyd Gartman was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Howard College—now known as Samford University—in Homewood, Alabama from 1949 to 1953, at Austin Peay State University from 1958 to 1959, and at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas from 1967 to 1969, compiling a career college football record of 30–61–1. Gartman was also the head basketball coach at Howard from 1950 to 1955, tallying a mark of 71–73. He was the head baseball coach at Howard from 1952 to 1955 and at the University of Texas–Pan American from 1962 to 1963, amassing a career college baseball record of 60–49.

He played college baseball at Auburn for coach Hal Baird from 1996 to 1999 and played in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) for 2 seasons from 1999 to 2000. Taylor played baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team while obtaining a degree. He achieved his master's degree while coaching for the Samford Bulldogs baseball team.

Grubb was also the head baseball coach at Samford in 1968.
