Doon School Ground is a multi-purpose school ground in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. As sports is compulsory at the school, the ground is spread over 30 acres (120,000 m2) of playing fields, the largest of which are Skinner's Field and the Main Field.
Dehradun, also spelled Dehra Dun, is the interim capital of Uttarakhand, a state in India. Located in the Garhwal region, it lies 236 kilometres (147 mi) north of India's capital New Delhi and 168 kilometres (104 mi) from Chandigarh. It is one of the "Counter Magnets" of the National Capital Region (NCR) being developed as an alternative centre of growth to help ease the migration and population explosion in the Delhi metropolitan area and to establish a smart city at Dehradun. During the days of British Raj, the official name of the town was Dehra. At present, Gairsain, a hill-town between Garhwal and Kumaon regions and centrally located in Uttarakhand, is being developed as permanent capital of the state.
Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a state in the northern part of India. It is often referred to as the Devabhumi due to a large number of Hindu temples and pilgrimage centres found throughout the state. Uttarakhand is known for the natural environment of the Himalayas, the Bhabhar and the Terai. On 9 November 2000, Uttarakhand became the 27th state of the Republic of India, being created from the Himalayan districts of Uttar Pradesh. It borders Tibet to the north; the Sudurpashchim Pradesh of Nepal to the east; the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south and Himachal Pradesh to the west and north-west as well as Haryana on its south-western corner. The state is divided into two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon, with a total of 13 districts. The interim capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun, the largest city of the state, which is a railhead. The High Court of the state is located in Nainital.
Cricket, hockey, athletics, boxing and association football are played seasonally. Tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, basketball, swimming and gymnastics tournaments are also available. Sport is dominated by cricket and hockey during the spring term and by football, athletics and boxing in the autumn term. Inter-house matches are played in cricket, hockey and football. Sports facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, a boxing ring and a multi-purpose hall with a gymnasium and facilities for indoor badminton, basketball and table tennis.
There are two artificial turf cricket pitches, five basketball courts, six tennis courts, four squash courts, ten cricket nets, seven fields for hockey and football (which can be converted to four cricket pitches to accommodate seasonal sports), a modern cricket pavilion and two 400-metre athletics tracks. Artificial turf is a surface of synthetic fibers made to look like natural grass. It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass. However, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial applications as well. The main reason is maintenance—artificial turf stands up to heavy use, such as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered, and partially covered stadiums may require artificial turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. Artificial turf does have its downside, however: limited life, periodic cleaning requirements, petroleum use, toxic chemicals from infill, and heightened health and safety concerns.
Doon hosts the annual Afzal Khan Memorial Basketball Tournament, an inter-school basketball tournament. [4] [5]
The ground has hosted three Ranji Trophy matches [6] for Uttar Pradesh cricket team in 1951 against Assam cricket team as match was won by Uttar Pradeshcricket team by an innings and 208 runs. [7] Second was played in 1951 between Uttar Pradesh cricket team and Holkar cricket team as the match ended in a drawn. [8] Second was played in 1970 between Uttar Pradesh cricket team and Madhya Pradesh cricket team as the match ended in a drawn. [9]
The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket championship played in India between teams representing regional and state cricket associations. The competition currently consists of 37 teams, with all 29 states in India and two of the seven union territories having at least one representation. The competition is named after first Indian cricketer who played international cricket, Ranjitsinhji, who was also known as 'Ranji'.
The Uttar Pradesh cricket team, formerly United Provinces Cricket Team, is a domestic cricket team which is based in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, run by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association. The team competes in the Ranji Trophy and won the tournament in 2005-06. They have won the Ranji Trophy only once and have been runners-up on five occasions. Young talents such as Suresh Raina, Mohammad Kaif, Piyush Chawla, R. P. Singh and Praveen Kumar and have passed through Uttar Pradesh and gone on to represent India.
The Assam cricket team is a domestic cricket team based in the Indian state of Assam, run by the Assam Cricket Association. They compete and represent the state annually in the first-class Ranji Trophy tournament, limited-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament and the Twenty 20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
