The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is a federal trial court whose geographic jurisdiction encompasses eight counties of the State of New York. Two of these are in New York City: New York (Manhattan) and Bronx; six are in the Hudson Valley: Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, and Sullivan. Appeals from the Southern District of New York are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The court also has concurrent jurisdiction with the Southern District of New York over the waters of New York (Manhattan) and Bronx Counties. Its courthouses are located in Brooklyn and Central Islip.

She was convicted of helping pass messages from her client Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, an Egyptian cleric convicted of planning terror attacks, to his followers in al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, an organization designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States Secretary of State.

Kadir was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for an alleged Islamist terrorist bomb plot in New York City.
The 2007 John F. Kennedy International Airport attack plot was an alleged Islamist terrorist plot to blow up a system of jet fuel supply tanks and pipelines that feed fuel to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Queens, New York. These pipelines travel throughout the undergrounds of New York City in densely populated areas. The alleged plot was foiled when an undercover law enforcement official was recruited to the homegrown terrorist cell.
Roslynn Renee Mauskopf is an American lawyer and former United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. She previously served as the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York from 2020 to 2021 and as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 2002 to 2007.

On May 20, 2009, US law enforcement arrested four men in connection with a fake plot concocted by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant to shoot down military airplanes flying out of an Air National Guard base in Newburgh, New York, and blow up two synagogues in the Riverdale community of the Bronx using weapons supplied by the FBI. The group was led by Shahed Hussain, a Pakistani criminal who was working for the FBI to avoid deportation for having defrauded the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Hussain has never been charged in the United States with any terrorism related offenses and was paid nearly US$100,000 by the FBI for his work on this plot.

In 2017, she was reassigned to the Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice team.
Carolyn Pokorny is a career federal prosecutor, who serves as the first assistant United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Since January 2025, she has served as acting United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Previously she served as the Inspector general for the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the Office of the MTA Inspector General, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
Gregory J. Scarpa Jr. is a former American mobster and caporegime in the Colombo crime family and government informant. He is the son of hitman and fellow caporegime in the family Gregory Scarpa. During the 1990s, Scarpa was sentenced to 40 years in prison for racketeering, and provided the government with information about terrorist tactics and possible attacks orchestrated by Ramzi Yousef. Scarpa Jr. has since won compassionate release from prison as a result of his failing health and terminal illness.
