Dora Lizette Irizarry (born January 26,1955) is a senior United States District Court Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Irizarry was born on January 26,1955,in San Sebastian,Puerto Rico, [1] and was raised in the Bronx in New York City. She attended the Bronx High School of Science and went on to graduate from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 and Columbia Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1979. [2] After law school,she worked as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx and Manhattan from 1979 to 1981. Irizarry said she wanted to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods in which she grew up,and specialized in drug and narcotics cases.
She was appointed a New York City Criminal Court judge by former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and then a judge of the New York Court of Claims by Governor George Pataki. As a Court of Claims judge,she served as an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court,sitting in Brooklyn and Manhattan. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve as a state judge in New York.
She was an assistant district attorney of the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor in the Bronx County District Attorney's Office from 1981 to 1987 and then in the New York County District Attorney's Office from 1987 to 1995. She then became a judge on the New York City Criminal Court from 1995 to 1997,and an Acting Justice on the Court of Claims in Kings County from 1997 to 1998,before serving in the same position in Manhattan from 1998 to 2002.
In 2002,Irizarry resigned from her judgeship to become the Republican nominee for Attorney General of New York,challenging Democratic incumbent Eliot Spitzer. She was the first Latina to seek statewide office in New York State. Irizarry lost the race by a 66%-30% margin,but ran a strong race in upstate New York. After the election,she entered private practice with the firm of Hoguet,Newman &Regal in Manhattan. [2]
In 2003,Irizarry was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Although the American Bar Association determined her to be "not qualified," [3] she was confirmed by the Senate on June 24,2004,and received her commission on July 8,2004,thereby becoming the first Hispanic judge in the Eastern District. [2] She became Chief Judge of the Eastern District on April 15,2016. [4] Her judicial seat is in Brooklyn. She assumed senior status on January 26,2020.
On December 15,2010,Judge Irizarry sentenced Islamist militant and engineer Abdul Kadir,58,of Guyana,to life in prison after the jury found him and co-defendant Russel Defreitas,a U.S. citizen born in Guyana,guilty of planning to blow up New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport by exploding fuel tanks and pipelines underneath it. She sentenced Defreitas to life in prison on February 17,2011. [5] One month previously,she had sentenced Abdel Nur,a co-defendant who pleaded guilty,to 15 years, [6] and the following year,Kareem Ibrahim,who was tried separately,was also found guilty and given a life sentence by Judge Irizarry. The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is a federal trial court whose geographic jurisdiction encompasses eight counties of the State of New York. Two of these are in New York City: New York (Manhattan) and Bronx; six are in the Hudson Valley: Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, and Sullivan. Appeals from the Southern District of New York are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

A chemical engineer by profession, he served in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2006 as a member of the main opposition party, the People's National Congress Reform. Kadir was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for an alleged Islamist terrorist bomb plot in New York City.
The 2007 John F. Kennedy International Airport attack plot was an alleged Islamist terrorist plot to blow up a system of jet fuel supply tanks and pipelines that feed fuel to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Queens, New York. These pipelines travel throughout the undergrounds of New York City in densely populated areas. The alleged plot was foiled when an undercover law enforcement official was recruited to the homegrown terrorist cell.
Roslynn Renee Mauskopf is an American lawyer and former United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. She previously served as the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York from 2020 to 2021 and as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 2002 to 2007.

On May 20, 2009, US law enforcement arrested four men in connection with a fake plot concocted by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant to shoot down military airplanes flying out of an Air National Guard base in Newburgh, New York, and blow up two synagogues in the Riverdale community of the Bronx using weapons supplied by the FBI. The group was led by Shahed Hussain, a Pakistani criminal who was working for the FBI to avoid deportation for having defrauded the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Hussain has never been charged in the United States with any terrorism related offenses and was paid nearly US$100,000 by the FBI for his work on this plot.

He is currently a partner at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for five years prior to leading the Southern District of New York.

Carolyn Pokorny is a career federal prosecutor, who serves as the first assistant United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Since January 2025, she has served as acting United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Previously she served as the Inspector general for the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the Office of the MTA Inspector General, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
Gregory J. Scarpa Jr. is a former American mobster and caporegime in the Colombo crime family and government informant. He is the son of hitman and fellow caporegime in the family Gregory Scarpa. During the 1990s, Scarpa was sentenced to 40 years in prison for racketeering, and provided the government with information about terrorist tactics and possible attacks orchestrated by Ramzi Yousef. Scarpa Jr. has since won compassionate release from prison as a result of his failing health and terminal illness.
