Downton is a civil parish in Herefordshire, located in the north of the county and containing the village of Downton-on-the-Rock. It is part of the Leintwardine group of parishes and shares a parish council with Leintwardine and Burrington. [1] In the Domesday Book Downton is referred to as "Duntune", meaning "hill settlement". [2] At Downton Gorge the River Teme cuts through a limestone ridge; above the gorge is Downton Castle, an 18th-century country house with a tower built to resemble a castle. [3]

The whole of the River Teme was designated as an SSSI, by English Nature, in 1996.

Thomas Crump was an English clergyman and amateur cricketer. After graduating from Oxford University, Crump held various ecclesiastical roles in the Herefordshire/Shropshire area before moving to Somerset in 1880. He remained in Somerset until his death in 1907.

<i>Cyathaspis</i> Extinct genus of jawless fishes

Cyathaspis is the type genus of the heterostracan order Cyathaspidiformes. Fossils are found in late Silurian strata in the Cunningham Creek Formation, New Brunswick, Canada and Europe, especially in the Downton Castle Sandstone of Great Britain and Gotland, Sweden. The living animal would have looked superficially like a tadpole, albeit covered in bony plates composed of the tissue aspidine, which is unique to heterostracan armor.

Frances Stackhouse Acton, known as Fanny, was a British botanist, archaeologist, writer and artist. Her father was noted botanist, Thomas Andrew Knight, who encouraged her education and included her in his experiments. She married an older land owner and, as they had no children, when he died she pursued her own interests, which included archaeology and architecture. She excavated a Roman villa, built a number of buildings and saved others in need of repair. She was keen on painting buildings and eventually went on to publish a charitable book, The Castles & Old Mansions of Shropshire.

Richard Knight (1659–1745)

Richard Knight (1659-1745), of Downton Hall, in the parish of Downton on the Rock in Herefordshire, England, was a wealthy ironmaster who operated the Bringewood Ironworks, on the Downton estate, and founded a large fortune and family dynasty.
