Dulwich Hamlet Women F.C., previously known as A.F.C. Phoenix, is a women's football club based in London, England. The team formed in 2010 and were based in Clapham before playing under the banner of Dulwich Hamlet F.C. in 2019. They are currently members of the London and South East Women's Regional Football League Premier Division and play at Champion Hill. A Reserves side also competes in the London and South East Women's Regional Football League Division One North.

History

Dulwich Hamlet F.C. was formed in 1893, by Lorraine 'Pa' Wilson. They were founder members of the Dulwich League in 1899, and were its inaugural champions. [2] The club went on to retain the title the following season. [2]

By 2018-2019 the need for the club to field a senior women's side had become apparent. A.F.C. Phoenix, a woman's football team formed less than a mile away in Clapham Common in 2010, [3] had gained significant attention in the local South-East London area for a dedicated fanbase, work ethic, and winning promotions in successive seasons.

In Summer 2019, the club announced a merger with A.F.C. Phoenix, so that the club could field senior men's and women's teams with identical status. [4] A key reason behind the merger for A.F.C. Phoenix players was Dulwich Hamlet's stance on women's and LGBTQ issues. [5] The women's team, now known as Dulwich Hamlet Women F.C., would play in the London and South East Women's Regional Football League (English Football Tier 5) for 2019–2020, with home matches taking place at Champion Hill, which hosted the 1977 WFA Cup final.

Shortly after the merger, Farouk Menia who had coached the team for eight years passed away in November 2019 after a long battle with cancer. [6] Menia was posthumously awarded the The Football Association's Grassroots Coach of the Year for Adults for 2020 and Champion Hill has a mural commemorating the coach. [7] [8]

The 2019–20 season was suspended in March before being curtailed in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic with Dulwich topping the league on 27 points, having only lost one game. [9] The 2020–21 season was again curtailed with Dulwich in first place. [10] As a result of these performances the club applied for promotion to the FA Women's National League Division One South East. Their application was ultimately unsuccessful, as Queens Park Rangers F.C. Women were promoted, despite having a poorer on-pitch performance over the two curtailed seasons. [11]

2021–22, the team's first full season as Dulwich Hamlet Women F.C., saw them finish 5th in the London and South East Women's Regional Football League Premier Division and reach the final of the Capital Women's Senior Cup, losing 2-0 to Ashford Town (Middlesex) F.C.. [12] [13] On International Transgender Day of Visibility they played a friendly against TRUK United, which was the first time in the world a team consisting of trans women took to the pitch. [14] These were the focus of several episodes of the Discovery+ documentary 'Peter Crouch: Save Our Beautiful Game' covering the former England and Dulwich player's return to the club. [15]

In 2022–23 Dulwich reached the Second round of the 2022–23 Women's FA Cup before losing 2-1 to Gillingham (now Chatham Town WFC) in front of a record crowd of 631 at Champion Hill. The league campaign saw them finish 4th in the London and South East Women's Regional Football League Premier Division, which concluded with a 2-1 loss to Millwall Lionesses L.F.C. at The Den.
