UK rap, also known as British hip hop or UK hip hop, is a music genre and culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/hip-hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by British Vogue magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Toasting and soundsystem cultures were also influential in genres outside of hip hop that still included rapping – such as grime, jungle, and UK garage.
Justin Jude Clarke-Samuel, better known by his stage name Ghetts, is a British grime MC, rapper, songwriter and actor. His music has been played on national radio stations such as BBC Radio 1, Kiss 100, BBC Asian Network, and BBC Radio 1Xtra. He released his debut studio album, Rebel with a Cause, via independent record label Disrupt on 9 March 2014. Known for his hard hitting lyrics and intricate rhyme schemes, he is associated and has toured internationally with such acts as Kano and was a member of N.A.S.T.Y. Crew.
Sound of... is an annual BBC poll of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent. It was first conducted by the BBC News website in 2003, and is now widely covered by the corporation's online, radio and TV outlets, as well as other media. A 10-strong longlist is published each December, with a ranked shortlist and annual winner announced the following January.
Jahmaal Noel Fyffe, better known by his stage name Chip, is an English rapper from Tottenham, London. In the past 14 years he has collaborated with the likes of Skepta, T.I., Meek Mill, Young Adz and many others. In 2009, he released his debut album, I Am Chipmunk, featuring four songs which peaked in the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, including the chart-topping "Oopsy Daisy". In 2011, Chipmunk released his follow-up album, the American hip hop-influenced Transition. It included the single "Champion" featuring Chris Brown, which peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart.
Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu , known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He gained recognition in 2012 after releasing "Like to Party", the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013). In 2017, Burna Boy signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and its parent company Warner Music Group. His third studio album Outside, which also serves as his major label debut, was released in 2018.
Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., known professionally as Stormzy, is a British rapper, singer, and songwriter. In 2014, he gained attention on the UK underground music scene through his Wicked Skengman series of freestyles over classic grime beats. Stormzy's song "Shut Up", which was initially released as a freestyle on YouTube, became popular and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart after he launched a campaign to reach Christmas number one.
David Orobosa Michael Omoregie, known professionally as Dave or Santan Dave, is a British rapper and actor. He is known for his socially conscious lyricism and wordplay.
"Hurtin' Me" is a song by English rapper Stefflon Don featuring American rapper French Montana released on 10 August 2017 as the lead single from Don's debut EP of the same name. The song peaked at number seven on UK Singles Chart in November 2017, becoming the rapper's highest-charting single to date and first to reach the top 10.
Stephanie Victoria Allen, known professionally as Stefflon Don, is an English rapper and singer. She rose to fame with her 2017 single "Hurtin' Me", which peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. In 2016, Allen released her debut mixtape Real Ting, followed by her second, Secure (2018).
Janum Khan, better known by his stage name Jaykae, is a British rapper and actor from Small Heath, Birmingham.
Errol Kojo Bellot, known professionally as Kojo Funds, is an English singer, rapper and songwriter. His music blends West African and Caribbean sounds with road rap, dancehall and pop.
"A No No" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey from her fifteenth studio album, Caution (2018). The song was written by Carey, Robert "Shea" Taylor, Priscilla Hamilton, Mason Betha and Camron Giles. Since the track samples Lil' Kim's "Crush on You" (1997), songwriting credits were added for a total of nine. Digitally released as a promotional single in November 2018, Epic Records serviced it to rhythmic contemporary and urban contemporary radio as the second single from the album on March 4, 2019.
Irving Ampofo Adjei, known professionally as Headie One, is a British rapper and singer. In 2018 he released his second solo mixtape, titled ‘The One’, which included the single "Know Better" featuring rapper RV, it became an "underground hit". Headie One is a member of the UK drill group OFB and is considered to be a pioneer innovator of the UK drill scene.
"Boasty" is a song by British rappers Wiley and Stefflon Don and Jamaican rapper Sean Paul featuring vocals from English actor and musician Idris Elba. It was originally released by Wiley featuring Mucky in August 2018, and remixed for release with contributions from Stefflon Don, Paul and Elba in January 2019. It reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in March 2019. A solo version of the track was released on the rapper's 14th studio album, Boasty Gang – The Album, which was released on 22 June 2020.
"Vossi Bop" is a song by British rapper Stormzy. It was released as a single on 25 April 2019 through #Merky and Atlantic Records as the lead single from his second studio album, Heavy Is the Head. The music video was also released the same day. It is his first solo music since his Gang Signs & Prayer album in 2017. The song debuted atop the UK Singles Chart, becoming Stormzy's first number-one single.
Dennis Junior Odunwo, known professionally as Tion Wayne, is a British rapper and DJ from Edmonton, North London.
Music x Road is a commercial mixtape by British rapper Headie One. It was released by Relentless Records on 23 August 2019. It features guest appearances from Dave, Skepta, Stefflon Don, Nav, Lotto Ash, RV, and Krept and Konan. All featured artists are fellow British rappers also, with the exception of Nav, who is Canadian. The mixtape peaked at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart.
Edna is the debut studio album by British rapper Headie One. It was released by Relentless Records on 9 October 2020. The album features guest appearances from M Huncho, AJ Tracey, Stormzy, Young T & Bugsey, Young Adz, Future, Drake, Skepta, Ivorian Doll, Kenny Beats, Aitch, Haile, Mahalia, and Kaash Paige. A deluxe version of the album was released on 12 February 2021 which features guest appearances from Rich the Kid, NorthSideBenji, Burna Boy and RV.
"I Dunno" is a song by Tion Wayne featuring Dutchavelli and Stormzy. It was released as a single on 29 May 2020 and peaked at number 7 on the UK Singles Chart.
"Clash" is a song by British rapper Dave, featuring fellow British rapper Stormzy, released on 9 July 2021 by Dave and Neighbourhood Recordings as the lead single from Dave's second studio album, We're All Alone in This Together (2021). "Clash" was written by the two artists, Luke Grieve and the song's producer Kyle Evans.
