EV Füssen, previously also called the Füssen Leopards, is an ice hockey team from Germany. They play their home games at the Bundesleistungszentrum für Eishockey (BLZ-Arena), located in Füssen, Allgäu. They currently play in the third level of German ice hockey, the Oberliga.

The club is one of the most successful in Germany, having won sixteen national titles, its last championship coming in 1973.

History

The club was formed on 11 December 1922 as an ice skating club. The club's ice hockey department was formed two years later and began playing competitive games the following year when it took on the reserves of SC Riessersee. In 1935 the club reached the final of the German championship for the first time but lost to SC Riessersee. [1]

When the club restarted its ice hockey department in 1945, after the Second World War, it found that of the twelve players it had before the war ten had either been killed in action or were still kept as prisoners of war. The club quickly recovered from this however and, by 1949, won its first of sixteen national titles. The club's fortunes greatly improved from 1952 when it hired Canadian coach Frank Trottier, winning seven consecutive championships from then on. In 1958 the club became one of the eight founding members of the new Ice hockey Bundesliga and its first champion, now under coach Markus Egen. Füssen was to become the league's most successful club, winning nine titles in the 36 seasons the Bundesliga existed until 1994. [1]

The club won its last German championship in 1973 but then had to clear the field for the more prosperous clubs from the larger cities, finding itself unable to compete financially. Eventually, in 1983, EVF was relegated from the Bundesliga, permanently leaving top level ice hockey in Germany behind.

Since then, the club has been fluctuating between Oberliga and 2nd Bundesliga, occasionally brushing with financial collapse like in 1983, when it became insolvent. The club, like other small town Bavarian clubs, has an excellent youth program but finds itself unable to retain its best players who, in most cases, move to financially more potent clubs. [2]

The club used to play its home games at the Kobelhang Stadium which held almost 15,000 in the early days but was later reduced to 7,000. In the late 1970s, the club took up the Bundesleistungszentrum as its home ground. [3]

After an insolvency in 2015 the club had to drop to the lowest tier of ice hockey in Bavaria, the Bezirksliga, winning its division in 2015–16. [4]

The Bavarian ice hockey leagues are part of the German ice hockey league system and form the tiers four to six of the league system in the state of Bavaria. The leagues are operated by the Bayrischer Eissport Verband, the Bavarian association for ice sports.

The Bavarian ice hockey league season 2007-08 started on 19 October 2007 with the first round in the Bayernliga and finished on 14 March 2008 with the third league final. It saw the EHC Waldkraiburg take out its second Bavarian title, having previously won it in 1987–88, then under the name of VfL Waldkraiburg. The club could have taken up promotion to the Oberliga but declined. The EV Weiden voluntarily withdrew from the Oberliga while Regensburg was forced to resign from the 2nd Bundesliga due to insolvency.

The DEL, 2nd Bundesliga and Oberliga are the first three levels of ice hockey in Germany. All three leagues operate nationwide. While the DEL is an independently operated league, the other two are run by the German ice hockey federation, the DEB, through the ESBG. The leagues below the Oberliga are operated by the state federations (German:Landesverbände) and don't run nationwide. The 2007–08 season for the three top leagues started on 6 September 2007 with the first round in the DEL and finished on 25 April 2008 with the fifth and last game of the 2nd Bundesliga finals.

The 2008-2009 Bavarian ice hockey season started on 17 October 2008 with the first round in the Bayernliga and finished on 22 March 2009 with the second Bayernliga final, with the ERV Schweinfurt taking out the title for a third time, having previously won it in 1990 and 2000.

SC Riessersee is a professional ice hockey team based in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Oberbayern, Germany. They currently play in The Oberliga, the third level of ice hockey in Germany. Prior to the 2013–14 season, they played in the 2nd Bundesliga. They play their home games at the Olympia-Eissport-Zentrum.

Hans Zach is a German ice hockey player and coach. During his playing career he played for five different clubs in the Eishockey-Bundesliga, EC Bad Tölz, SC Riessersee, Berliner SC, EV Landshut and SB Rosenheim. He also represented the German national team in four Ice Hockey World Championships in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979 as well as at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The 2019/20 Oberliga season was the 61st season of the Oberliga, the third-tier of German ice hockey. The Oberliga operated with two regional leagues, North and South. 24 teams competed in the season that spanned from 28 September 2019 till 11 March 2020. The regular season and championship playoff qualifiers was completed, but the season was then cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the remainder of the Oberliga season was cancelled by DEB. The championship playoffs were not contested so no Oberliga champion was named. There was also no sporting promotion or relegation, with ERC Sonthofen the only team to be relegated due to the club entering insolvency. Tilburg Trappers were crowned Oberliga North premiers, while Eisbären Regensburg were crowned Oberliga South premiers.

The 2018–19 Oberliga season was the 60th season of the Oberliga, the third tier of German ice hockey. The Oberliga operated with two regional leagues, North and South. 25 teams competed in the season that lasted from 21 September 2018 till 30 April 2019. The Tilburg Trappers and EC Peiting won the North and South premierships respectively. EV Landshut was crowned Oberliga champion for winning the playoffs, and by doing so they also secured promotion to DEL2. EHC Waldkraiburg, EC Harzer Falken, and ECC Preussen Berlin were all relegated to the Regionalliga.
