Earthtone9 (stylised earthtone9) is an English alternative metal band from Nottingham.
Signing to Copro Records in 1998, the band's first major release was the album Lo-Def(inition) Discord, which comprised songs from their three demos with a few new tracks. The record was produced on a budget of £500. Their harshest and noisiest recording, it quickly grabbed the attention of the British rock press, with favourable reviews in Terrorizer and Metal Hammer and a five-star rating in mainstream modern rock magazine Kerrang!
After extensive touring, ...Discord was followed in 1999 by Off Kilter Enhancement. Again it was a critical success, but commercial recognition was limited. The band had more time and money to play with this time, and it is here that the classic et9 sound crystallised – harsh metal inspired by Helmet and Neurosis, mixed with softer textured moments, with Tool-esque dynamics and arrangements, not to mention enigmatic song titles and lyrics (e.g. "Möe=ra (t-talk)", "i nagual eye"). Barely a year later, after the departure of original bassist Graeme Watts, who was replaced by David Anderson, the band delivered their third album – voted 16th best album of 2000 by Metal Hammer [2] – Arc'tan'gent . It was described by the band as the first record they were truly happy with, having for the first time not been rushed in the recording process.
During a break in touring and rehearsing following the release of Arc'tan'gent, Karl Middleton briefly entered the studio to lay down additional vocals on a song called 'unhinged' by the rising post hardcore UK band Landmine Spring. The song featured on their first full-length album Elephantine, which was released in 2001 via Loudspeaker records, and also lead to Landmine Spring playing on Earthtone9's autumn tour.
Apart from some minor distribution of their existing material, attempts at an American record deal failed. The band announced their dissolution in early 2002. After their farewell tour, their rejected demo saw release as the Omega EP.
In 2004, Hi-Point (Rem), which was a remastered version of 2000's first EP Hi-Point, was released.
All members continued to play in other bands – notably, Karl Middleton joined hardcore supergroup the Blueprint.
Furthermore, Middleton and Simon Hutchby are now in Twin Zero, and Middleton is also in the Brighton-based band Blackstorm, as well as providing guest vocals on "Alpha Signal Three", a track on the British rock band Reuben's second album Very Fast Very Dangerous . Owen Packard has played guitar and guested on the This Is Menace track "No End in Sight".
In May 2010, the band announced they were reforming "to play a handful of gigs to remind everyone just how good they were". A great hits compilation, Inside, Embers Glow..., was released for free download in July 2010. [3] Their first announcement of a new gig came at the end of May when they were the first band confirmed for the 2010 edition of the Damnation Festival. Their first gig however was at Sonisphere Festival on Saturday 31 July 2010. On Sunday 30 January 2011, Earthtone9 announced that they will be embarking on a six date United Kingdom tour with The Ocean Collective, Maybeshewill and Humanfly.
Earthtone9 announced that they were searching for supporters through Pledge Music for their new EP For Cause and Consequence that features four new songs which at the time were already in production. [4] The EP was released on 16 May 2011 featuring 4 new tracks; "Tide of Ambition", "Ghosts", "The Trail That We Carved Out" and "Reborn". The EP was available for download for fans who had contributed via the Pledge Music scheme. The download also featured videos for "Tat Twam Asi", "Evil Crawling I" and new track, "Tide of Ambition".
Their fourth full-length album, titled IV was released in April 2013 to highly positive critical acclaim. [5] [6] The band also reformed to support Pitchshifter for a short UK tour in 2018, [7] and joined the 2020 line-up for the experimental music festival ArcTanGent Festival. [8]
On 26 July 2022, it was announced on the bands Facebook page that they are going back into hibernation as of immediate effect. "We're calling time on the idea of releasing new material, and playing the odd show just isn't working out. We've all got new musical projects going on and the time feels right to draw a line under this and do new things." [9]
On 21 March 2024, the band announced the development of their fifth album, In Resonance Nexus, scheduled for release on 21 June 2024. [10] The album announcement was accompanied by confirmation of the first single from the album, "Oceanic Drift". [11]
Stylistically, Earthtone9 combines a wide variety of influences from rock, metal, noise and hardcore. [12] Characteristic are the constant mood changes within individual songs and albums. [13] [14] Often, heaviness and oppressive moments are combined with harmony and melody. A large number of critics attested to earthtone9's creativity and innovative spirit. [12] [15] [16] The band is sometimes attributed cult status. [17] [18] [19] Guitarist Joe Roberts named bands such as Alice in Chains, Carcass, Faith No More, Helmet, Metallica, Monster Magnet and The Police among his influences. [20]

Pitchshifter are an English industrial rock band from Nottingham, formed in 1989. The band was started by lead guitarist and programmer Johnny A. Carter, and bassist and vocalist Mark Clayden. The band's early material was characterized for its gritty industrial metal sound with downtuned guitars and the use of drum machines, and has been cited as one of the originators of the genre along with Godflesh. With later albums the group's music became increasingly more melodic and strongly influenced by nu metal and drum and bass; particularly evident of their 1998 release www.pitchshifter.com, which has been compared with groups like The Prodigy.
Anathema were an English rock band from Liverpool. The group was formed in 1990 by Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, bassist Jamie Cavanagh, drummer/keyboardist John Douglas, and vocalist Darren White.
Gravity Kills is an American industrial rock band from St. Louis, Missouri. Formed in 1994, they had their first hit single with "Guilty", a track later released on their 1996 self-titled debut album. The band released two additional albums of new material, Perversion in 1998 and Superstarved in 2002, as well as a remix album in 1997. Their singles "Falling" and "One Thing" both achieved minor radio success. Their music was described by one critic as "a blending of eerie industrial rock with a pop-infused melodic chorus and a bit of hard-core head banging." Due to the lack of tour support from their record label, they were unable to complete a tour for Superstarved and broke up in 2003. From 2005 to 2012, Gravity Kills reunited for occasional one-off festivals and shows. The band reunited in 2023 as they reissued their self-titled debut album and announced a singular show in St. Louis that same year.
www.pitchshifter.com is the fourth album by the British industrial metal band Pitchshifter. It was released in the United Kingdom by Geffen Records on 2 March 1998, and in the United States by DGC Records on 7 April 1998. The record, which was their first released through a major label, sold just over 60,000 copies in the US alone—selling nearly twice as much as the group's proceeding album Deviant did.
Deviant is the fifth album by the British industrial metal band Pitchshifter, released in 2000. It was a follow-up to the commercially successful album www.pitchshifter.com, but was seen by the record label as a disappointment. Promotional videos by DOSE Productions were made for the tracks "Hidden Agenda" and "Dead Battery". The track "Everything's Fucked" was originally released as "Everything Sucks". Jello Biafra makes an appearance on the track "As Seen on TV". By March 2002, the album had sold 33,000 copies in the U.S., just over half the amount www.pitchshifter.com had sold at the same time.
Keith York is an English session drummer who has toured throughout the world and worked with a range of bands, including The Lightning Seeds, The Orb, Pitchshifter, Bivouac, Ladytron, and Esoteric, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Broadcast and Love Amongst Ruin. He was a founding member of the 1990s Liverpool-based psychedelic rock band Dr Phibes & the House of Wax Equations along with Howard King, Jr. and Lee Belsham. He is currently playing various jazz gigs and festivals, while recording, touring, and drumming for The Orb.
Misery Loves Co. is a Swedish alternative metal duo, initially active in the 1990s and early 2000s and again since 2016. The band combine the hostility of thrash metal riffs with electronic samples usually associated with industrial music. Their lyrics generally focus on bleak sexual visions and pain over troubled relationships.

Bullet for My Valentine, often abbreviated as BFMV, are a Welsh heavy metal band from Bridgend, formed in 1998. The band is currently composed of Matthew Tuck, Michael Paget, Jason Bowld (drums) and Jamie Mathias. Former members include Michael Thomas, Jason James and Nick Crandle; the latter were on bass. They were formed under the name Jeff Killed John and started their music career by covering songs by Metallica and Nirvana. Jeff Killed John recorded six songs which were not released; two of these tracks were reworked later in their career as Bullet for My Valentine. A change of style from that of Jeff Killed John led the band to change their name. In 2002, the band secured a five-album deal with Sony BMG. The band has stated that their music is influenced by classic metal acts such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Slayer. The band is part of the Cardiff music scene.

arc'tan'gent is the third album by British metal band earthtone9. The album received critical acclaim on its release. It was rated #16 in both Metal Hammer and Rock Sound magazines' "Albums of 2000" polls, and #24 in Terrorizer's equivalent poll. It was also voted #79 by the readers of Kerrang! in their 2005 readers' poll of the 100 best British rock albums ever. In 2024, Dom Lawson of Blabbermouth.net wrote that the album was "regarded as one of the great British metal records of [its] era."

Jason Bowld is a British drummer currently playing with the heavy metal band Bullet for My Valentine, and formerly of Pitchshifter, This Is Menace and AxeWound. Bowld's first show with Bullet for My Valentine was at Wembley Arena in 2010, their original drummer Michael Thomas wasn't able to play. Jason said Matt Tuck rang him and gave him the setlist with no rehearsals, he had two days to learn the set. In 2021, Jim Davies of Pitchshifter, Jamie Mathias of Bullet For My Valentine, Tut Tut Child and Jason, formed Shadow Addict, an electro metal band.
