The storm traveled as a supercell with crazy structure from the Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, and Pinnacle, North Carolina, area across central Stokes County and into Rockingham County. It took out trees, damaged homes, and blocked roads before it lifted off southwest of Reidsville.

East Derry has a separate ZIP code (03041) from the rest of the town of Derry. Alan Shepard lived in the village as a boy. Station #4 of the Derry Fire Department is located in the village.

He was the mayor of Madison, North Carolina for twelve years and later served on the town's Board of Aldermen.
