Mitcham is a district of south west London in the London Borough of Merton. It is centred 7.2 miles (11.6 km) south-west of Charing Cross. In part of clear urban density but mainly a suburb of houses with gardens, it is close to the cut-off of Inner London and Outer London, and has traces of its former village in the historic county of Surrey. It is both residentially and financially developed and served by train, bus and tram routes. Localities within Mitcham include Mitcham Town Centre and Mitcham Common. Amenities include Mitcham Library and Mitcham Cricket Green. Nearby major districts are Wimbledon, Streatham, Croydon, Tooting, Morden and Sutton. Mitcham, most broadly defined, had a population of 63,393 which includes the electoral wards of Cricket Green, Figges Marsh, Graveney, Lavender Fields, Longthornton and Pollards Hill in 2011 and its surrounding constituency, which contains other parts of south Merton, had a population of 103,298.

The road enters the North Downs part of Surrey in skirting past Banstead and through its late 19th century offspring villages particularly Burgh Heath and Kingswood, Surrey, crosses the M25 motorway at Junction 8, then after returning to single carriageways, passes through the castle town of Reigate and the substantial buffer zones of two rural villages and terminates at the main roads network forming Gatwick Airport's northern perimeter.

The Sutton Loop Line, also known as the Wimbledon Loop, is part of Thameslink and is the circular route formed where the St Helier line diverges from the Portsmouth Line at Streatham South junction and rejoins it near Sutton station.

The short section between West Sutton station and West junction is known as the "Wall of Death", possibly due to the very steep concrete walls to the cutting on both sides and the sharpness of the curve which resemble the motorcycle ride at a funfair.
