Ebony Leea Morrison OLY (born 28 December 1994) is a Liberian-American hurdler. Her paternal ancestry traces to Liberia, which allows her to compete for the country. [1] At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she represented Liberia. She ran a time of 12.74 in the women's 100m hurdles and was a semi finalist. [2] She will also compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [3]

Career

Morrison attended Auburn University before transferring in 2014–2015 to the University of Miami where she studied film and media studies. [2] At Miami, she competed in the women's 60m and 100m hurdles. [4]

Morrison was one of three competitors representing Liberia at the 2020 Olympics, along with sprinters Joseph Fahnbulleh and Emmanuel Matadi. She and Fahnbulleh carried the Liberian flag in the Parade of Nations in the opening ceremony. [5] The team's outfits were designed by Liberian-American designer Telfar Clemens. [6]

Morrison earned a spot on Team Liberia for the 2024 Summer Olympics and will run in the women's 100m hurdles competition in Paris, France. [3]

Personal life

Morrison was born to Stacey Morrison and Demar Woodson and grew up in Miami, Florida. [4] Her maternal grandmother, Almarita “Rita” Mackins, played a huge role in helping her mother raise her. [4] [7] She attended Southridge High School [4] and Auburn University, where she earned a full-ride scholarship for track and field. After the passing of her mother from cancer in 2014, she returned to Miami to be closer to her grandmother. She also received another full-ride scholarship to continue her pursuit of track at the University of Miami. [1]

Morrison earned her Bachelor's in Motion Picture Production with a minor in Theatre at the University of Miami. [1] Her love for track and the arts can be attributed to her mother, Stacey, who ran track [4] and studied theatre at Morgan State University. Her mother later became a theatre professor at Florida A&M University. [7]

She also earned a bronze medal in the 200 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics with a time of 22.00s. She was born in Kingston and retired after the 2018 season.

Angela Whyte is a Canadian hurdler in track and field athletic competition. She is a three-time Olympian in the 100m hurdles at the Summer Olympics. She was a four-time All-American and a five-time Big West Conference champion in two years of competition at the University of Idaho and holds school records in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, multi-events and relays at both Idaho and the University of New Mexico. She also holds two Big West records in the 100m hurdles. She is currently an assistant track and field coach at Washington State University.

Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She was the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. At both the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo Games, she also took gold as part of women's 4 × 400 metres relay team.

Oluwatobiloba Ayomide "Tobi" Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles and also competes as a sprinter. Amusan is the current world record holder in the 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds which she set at the 2022 women's 100 metres hurdles semi-final in Eugene, Oregon. She is the current Commonwealth and African champion in the 100 m hurdles, as well as the meet record holder in those two competitions. Amusan became the first ever Nigerian world champion and world record holder in an athletics event when she won the 2022 World Championships 100 m hurdles gold medal, setting the current world record of 12.12 seconds (+0.9 m/s) in the semi-final, followed up by a 12.06 seconds (+2.5 m/s) in the final. She won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100 m hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion. She is also the current Diamond league champion in the 100 metres hurdles having won the final in 12.33 seconds (+1.8 m/s) achieving a winning streak in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The men's 200 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 3 and 4 August 2021 at the Olympic Stadium. 48 athletes from 33 nations competed, including five universality places. Cyréna Samba-Mayela is a French athlete who competes in the 60 metres hurdles and 100 metres hurdles. She won the gold medal in the 60 m hurdles at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, a silver medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships where she lowered the current French national record to 7.73 seconds, and the gold medal at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, where she established a new personal best, national record and championship record at 12.31 seconds.
