Ecca Vandal is a South African-born Sri Lankan-Australian singer-songwriter and rapper, currently living in Melbourne. To date, Vandal has released one studio album: Ecca Vandal .

Early life

Vandal was born in Louis Trichardt, South Africa, to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents. When she was a child, her parents chose to leave South Africa with Ecca and her older sisters and moved to Australia, settling in Melbourne. [1] Vandal grew up listening to gospel music, and, as she recalled, "got into [her] sister's record collection, soul and hip hop and '90s RnB. And then [she] actually became obsessed with jazz music". [2] Vandal attended the Victorian College of the Arts, studying for a Bachelor of Creative Arts. [3] [4]

Music career

2013–2016: Early years

In July 2015, she played at Splendour in the Grass. [5]

On 29 January 2016, Vandal's debut EP, End of Time was released, with her performing a promotional national tour throughout February. [6]

2017–present: Self-titled debut album

On 28 July 2017, Vandal released her first single, "Broke Days, Party Nights", from her then-upcoming debut album, with an accompanying music video. On 22 September, the single "Future Heroine" was released, along with its music video. On 12 October, Vandal released the third single, "Price of Living", featuring Dennis Lyxzén of Refused, and Jason Aalon Butler of Letlive. [7] On 20 October, Vandal released her debut self-titled album. Thomas Smith, of NME , gave the album a rating of 4-out-of-5 stars. [8] From 3–25 November, Vandal performed a national tour for the album. In December, Vandal made her UK tour debut, supporting Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. She then returned home to perform at the 2017 Falls Music & Arts Festival. [9]

In March 2018, she supported Incubus on their Australian East Coast tour. [10] In April, Vandal released a music video for her track "Your Orbit", featuring Sampa the Great. June saw Ecca Vandal perform at Download Festival on the Avalanche Stage. [11] In July, Ecca Vandal traveled to Paris, France and performed at Afropunk Paris 2018 held at the Grande Halle de la Villette. [12] On 24-26 August, Ecca Vandal performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals back in the UK. [13] In September she performed at Reeperbahn 2018. [14] In November, Vandal collaborated with Birdz on his track "Place of Dreams". [15] In December, Vandal joined the lineup for the inaugural Good Things Festival. [16]

On 10 January 2019, Ecca Vandal was confirmed to appear on Hilltop Hoods' new album The Great Expanse as a featured artist, it was later released in February. She appears on the tracks "Be Yourself" alongside feature artist Nyassa, and "Exit Sign" alongside feature artist Illy. [17] "Exit Sign" debuted at #44 on the ARIA Singles Charts. [18] On 15 May, Vandal was confirmed to appear at the 2019 Dark Mofo festival in Hobart, performing with Two People and Slag Queens. [19] On 10 July, Vandal was featured on the single "In My Mind" by Alice Ivy. [20] On 10 December, Vandal co-wrote and performed the vocals for League of Legends ' new champion Rell's theme song. [21]

On 21 February 2021, Ecca Vandal was featured on Void of Vision's re-imagined version of their single "Decay" from their 2019 album Hyperdaze . [22]

Luca Brasi are an Australian rock band formed in St Helens, Tasmania in 2009. The current line-up of the band features Thomas Busby on lead guitar, Danny Flood on drums, and Tyler Richardson on lead vocals and bass guitar. Sampa Tembo, known professionally as Sampa the Great, is a Zambian singer, rapper and songwriter. Between 2014 and 2020, she was based in Australia. Her debut solo album, The Return, peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 she won Best Hip Hop Release for her second single, "Final Form". In the following year she won the same category for The Return, as well as Best Female Artist and Best Independent Release. In March 2020 Sampa became the first artist to win the Australian Music Prize twice: for Birds and the Bee9 and The Return. The artist was based back in Zambia from late 2020, where she issued her second studio album, As Above, So Below.
