Edward J. Lawrence was an American wooden six-masted schooner launched in 1908 by the Percy & Small Shipyard in Bath, Maine. Edward J. Lawrence was the last survivor of ten six-masted schooners built between 1900 and 1909, with the ship consumed by flames in 1925 while moored off Portland, Maine, as thousands of spectators took in the spectacle according to a report at the time.

Description

Built for the Portland-based fleet operator J.S. Winslow Co. [1] and named for a Maine philanthropist who made his fortune from cotton and lumber mills, [2] Edward J. Lawrence was the fourth largest schooner built by Percy & Small as ranked by gross tonnage, after Wyoming , the largest wooden ship ever built; [3] Edward B. Winslow, launched the same year as Edward J. Lawrence; and Eleanor A. Percy. [4]

Like other Percy & Small schooners, Edward J. Lawrence was designed to capitalize on coal trade between ports of the East Coast of the United States, [5] with the wood schooners relatively inexpensive to build and operate compared to steamships. But the extreme length of the six-masted schooners subjected hulls to stresses in rough seas, compromising seams and caulking as hulls flexed along their lengths. [6]

Percy & Small equipped the schooners it built with steam-powered donkey engines to operate bilge pumps and hoist the heavy sails up masts.

As the case with other six-masted schooners built in Maine, Edward J. Lawrence saw limited service during World War I with transatlantic voyages carrying military or supply cargoes.

History

Edward J. Lawrence was launched at Percy & Small on April 2, 1908, with William Kreger an early shipmaster for the schooner under J.S. Winslow ownership. [7]

On June 16, 1909, Edward J. Lawrence went aground at Cross Rip Shoals off Nantucket, while en route to Portland with coal loaded at Norfolk, Virginia, but floated free afterward with the assistance of a tugboat. [8]

During Kreger's tenure, Edward J. Lawrence went aground on two other occasions without significant damage, and struck a ledge in another incident. On October 13, 1913, the ship sailed through a nor'easter off Cape Cod, taking on seven feet of water in its hold and listing during the storm, then dropping anchor to ride out the worst of it. Three months later in January 1914, Edward J. Lawrence again sailed through a major storm that claimed Grace A. Martin and Fuller Palmer, two other Percy & Small-built schooners.

The combined effect of the storms and groundings of Edward J. Lawrence is thought to have produced hogging in the hull that compromised the ship's seaworthiness.

Under a new shipmaster named Frank H. Peterson, Edward J. Lawrence again dodged disaster after delivering a load of artillery shell casings to the port of La Pallice, France. Departing port alongside another Percy & Small-built schooner called Carl F. Cressy, the two ships sailed southwest, initially under the watch of French gunboats which eventually turned back to the Bay of Biscay. With a radio on board Edward J. Lawrence, Peterson received a night-time alert of a U-boat operating some 60 miles distant on the course the ships were sailing. Peterson set a new tack to the northeast, but with Carl F. Cressy lacking a radio was unable to warn his counterpart. Carl F. Cressy was sunk by SM U-93 the following day on August 23, 1917. [9]

On an unknown date, South Portland native and shipmaster Joseph H. York was installed as shipmaster of Edward J. Lawrence, with York having captained George W. Wells, the first six-masted schooner built on the East Coast; and Thomas W. Lawson , the only seven-masted schooner ever built, which had a steel hull.

York was in command of George W. Wells when it was stranded on September 3, 1913, near Hatteras Inlet. York triggered a U.S. Department of the Treasury inquiry after claiming members of the United States Life-Saving Service had offered to purchase the wreck with an eye on profiting in violation of federal rules, which was not substantiated subsequently. [10]

In 1925, Edward J. Lawrence remained in Portland Harbor during a contractual dispute over a tugboat company's claim for nonpayment of invoices owed, [11] with U.S. Marshals ultimately impounding the vessel with the intent to auction it for the benefit of the claimants.

About 11 a.m. on December 26, 1925, a fire broke out on board, with an illegal liquor still thought to have been the cause of the blaze. The South Portland Historical Society has a newspaper clipping in its archives with a photograph captioned "Battling To Save The Edward J. Lawrence" by an unspecified publisher, that shows three vessels alongside the burning schooner during the attempt to extinguish the fire: an unidentified fireboat, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Ossipee, and the steam tugboat Cumberland. [12]

A Boston Globe correspondent reported the decision to beach Edward J. Lawrence on a reef off Fort Gorges in Portland Harbor, and described the fire as "the most spectacular for years" with the 320-foot length of the ship and its masts "fringed with flame". Thousands of onlookers watched the fire and efforts to extinguish it, according to the report. [13]

Present day

Maine Maritime Museum lists more than 40 artifacts in its archives and collections related to Edward J. Lawrence, including ship records. Photographs in the collection include shots of Edward J. Lawrence at sea and in ports including Barcelona and Buenos Aires; individual crew members; and the fire and ship's rudder which washed ashore afterward. The collection also includes ship components salvaged from the wreck in Portland Harbor. [14]

Other papers related to Edward J. Lawrence are archived by the National Archives and Records Administration [15] and Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.

At low tide, hull ribs are visible close to the surface at a point of Portland Harbor in the vicinity of Fort Gorges and Little Diamond Island, that are believed to be part of the wreck of the Edward J. Lawrence. [16]

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's chart for Casco Bay marks a shipwreck just north of Fort Gorges and west of Little Diamond Island. [17]

A schooner is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. Many schooners are gaff-rigged, but other examples include Bermuda rig and the staysail schooner.

A brig is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: two masts which are both square-rigged. Brigs originated in the second half of the 18th century and were a common type of smaller merchant vessel or warship from then until the latter part of the 19th century. In commercial use, they were gradually replaced by fore-and-aft rigged vessels such as schooners, as owners sought to reduce crew costs by having rigs that could be handled by fewer men. In Royal Navy use, brigs were retained for training use when the battle fleets consisted almost entirely of iron-hulled steamships.

Thomas W. Lawson was a seven-masted, steel-hulled schooner built for the Pacific trade, but used primarily to haul coal and oil along the East Coast of the United States. Named for copper baron Thomas W. Lawson, a Boston millionaire, stock-broker, book author, and president of the Boston Bay State Gas Co., she was launched in 1902 as the largest schooner and largest sailing vessel without an auxiliary engine ever built.

<i>Shenandoah</i> (schooner)

The Shenandoah is a 108-foot (33 m) topsail schooner built in Maine in 1964, and operates as a cruise ship and educational vessel in the waters of Vineyard Haven Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. She is claimed to be the only schooner of her size and topsail rig without an engine in the world.

Grace Bailey, also known for many years as Mattie, is a two-masted schooner whose home port is Camden Harbor, Camden, Maine. Built in 1882 in Patchogue, New York, she is one of four surviving two-masted wooden-hulled schooners, once the most common vessel in the American coasting trade. She was one of the first ships in the fleet of historic vessels known as "Maine windjammers", which offer cruises in Penobscot Bay and the Maine coast, entering that service in 1939. She last underwent major restoration in 1989–90. She was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

Isaac H. Evans US two-masted schooner

Isaac H. Evans, originally Boyd N. Sheppard, is a two-masted schooner berthed in Rockland, Maine. She is a Maine windjammer, serving the tourist trade. Built in 1886 in Mauricetown, New Jersey, she is the oldest of a small number of surviving oyster schooners, used in service of the oyster harvesting industry in the coastal waters of New Jersey. She was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

Literally, the word pinisi refers to a type of rigging of Indonesian sailing vessels. A pinisi carries seven to eight sails on two masts, arranged like a gaff-ketch with what is called 'standing gaffs' — i.e., unlike most Western ships using such a rig, the two main sails are not opened by raising the spars they are attached to, but the sails are 'pulled out' like curtains along the gaffs which are fixed at around the centre of the masts.

Samuel P. Ely is a shipwreck in Two Harbors, Minnesota listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was a schooner that sailed the Great Lakes carrying iron ore, coal, and other bulk freight. It was built in 1869 and was a fairly typical example of the 200-foot schooner built in the 1870s, though she was reinforced for the demands of carrying iron ore.

The Cora F. Cressey was a five masted 273 feet (83 m) wooden-hulled freight schooner operating in the coasting trade along the east coast of the United States. Built in 1902, it served in that trade until 1928. After serving for a time as a floating nightclub, its hulk was towed to the Keene Narrows in Bremen, Maine, where it was scuttled to serve as a breakwater for a lobster operation. Despite its deteriorating condition, the hulk is one of the largest surviving wooden hulls in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

<i>Bagheera</i> (schooner) United States historic place

Bagheera, formerly Beacon Rock, is a historic schooner normally berthed at the Maine State Pier in Portland, Maine. She is a two-masted auxiliary rigged schooner, built in 1924 by the noted naval architect John G. Alden, and is noted for her racing success on the Great Lakes. She is now owned and operated by the Portland Schooner Company, which offers sailing tours of Casco Bay, using Bagheera and Wendameen. Bagheera was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

<i>Hesper</i> and <i>Luther Little</i>

The Hesper and Luther Little were two trade route schooners that were left abandoned in Wiscasset, Maine. Both ships were built in Massachusetts in the 1910s, and wound up under one owner by 1932. Despite efforts to make use of the two schooners, this last owner went bankrupt and died not long afterwards. Both ships were essentially abandoned where their owner had left them in Wiscasset where they were disintegrated over time. Despite efforts to save the ships as tourist attractions, both were demolished in 1998 having been finally reduced to piles of debris by the elements. Various pieces of the former ships were saved by the public from the local landfill while others are now displayed in museums.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Timberwind (schooner)</span> United States historic place

The schooner Timberwind is a historic former pilot boat, now berthed in Portland, Maine. Built in 1931, she served as a pilot boat in Portland Harbor until 1969, and was then converted into a schooner as part of the Maine "windjammer" tourist fleet. She is one of a very small number of early 20th-century purpose-built pilot boats that has survived major alteration, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. She moved to Rockport in 1969 and then to Belfast in 2015. She was purchased by the Portland Schooner Company in 2018.

<i>Friend</i> (pilot boat) Sandy Hook Pilot boat

The Friend was a 19th-century pilot boat built by Daniel D. Kelley & Holmes East Boston shipyard in 1848 for Boston pilots. She helped transport Boston maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the Boston Harbor. The Friend was one of the last of the low sided, straight sheared schooners built in the 1840s for Boston pilots. The second Boston pilot boat Friend was built in 1887. Her name came from the older Friend that was in the service in the late 1840s. Captain Thomas Cooper sold the Friend to New York pilots in 1893. Cooper replaced the Friend with the pilot-boat Columbia in 1894.

The Percy & Small Shipyard is a former shipyard and modern-day historic site located on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. In 1909, the shipyard launched Wyoming, the largest wooden sailing ship ever built.
