Edward Jarvis FRAS FRHistS (born 1975) is a British author of religious history,politics and theology,and an Anglican clergyman. [1] His books address previously underresearched topics such as the Independent Sacramental Movement and aspects of the introduction of Christianity in Southeast Asia,specifically in Vietnam,Myanmar (Burma),Malaysia,and Singapore. [2] [3]
Edward Jarvis was born in Kingston upon Hull,England,in 1975,to an English father and an Italian mother. [4] His great-grandfather was the Italian film actor Umberto Sclanizza. Jarvis attended Malet Lambert School before studying theology and religious studies at Trinity &All Saints College,Logos Institute of Theology,and York St John University.
Jarvis wrote the first biographies of Brazilian bishop Carlos Duarte Costa and the Vietnamese archbishop NgôĐình Thục,brother of President NgôĐình Diệm. [5] [6] [7] He has contributed to periodicals of church and society interest. [8] [9] In 2021,2022,and 2024 he produced three volumes on the history,theology,and sociology of the Anglican Churches in Southeast Asia. [10] [11] [12]
Jarvis was elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society (FRAS) in 2019. [13] He was previously a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute. [14] In 2021 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS). [15] He is a member of Sion College and the Society of the Faith.
The Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian communion after the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Founded in 1867 in London, the communion has more than 85 million members within the Church of England and other autocephalous national and regional churches in full communion. The traditional origins of Anglican doctrine are summarised in the Thirty-nine Articles (1571). The archbishop of Canterbury in England acts as a focus of unity, recognised as primus inter pares, but does not exercise authority in Anglican provinces outside of the Church of England. Most, but not all, member churches of the communion are the historic national or regional Anglican churches.
Sedevacantism is a traditionalist Catholic movement which holds that since the death of Pius XII the alleged occupiers of the Holy See are not valid popes due to their espousal of one or more heresies and that, for lack of a valid pope, the See of Rome is thus vacant. Sedevacantism owes its origins to the rejection of the theological and disciplinary changes implemented following the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965).
Pierre Martin Ngô Đình Thục was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Huế, South Vietnam, and later a sedevacantist bishop who was excommunicated by the Holy See but is believed to have reconciled with the Holy See before his death in 1984. He was a member of the Ngô family who ruled South Vietnam in the years leading up to the Vietnam War. He was the founder of Dalat University. Today, various Independent Catholic and sedevacantist groups claim to have derived their apostolic succession from Thục.

Carlos Duarte Costa was a Brazilian Catholic bishop who became the founder of the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church, an Independent Catholic church, and its international communion, which long after his death became the short-lived Worldwide Communion of Catholic Apostolic Churches.
Independent Catholicism is an independent sacramental movement of clergy and laity who self-identify as Catholic and form "micro-churches claiming apostolic succession and valid sacraments", in spite of not being affiliated to the historic Catholic church, the Roman Catholic church. He was known for his traditionalist Catholic positions and was an advocate of sedeprivationism. McKenna was one of the leaders of the Orthodox Roman Catholic Movement (ORCM). He was also known from the Fox TV-movie The Haunted, which is about the Smurl haunting where McKenna conducted two exorcisms.
