Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh is a state owned utility and electricity company located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] It is a subsidiary of Bangladesh Power Development Board. [2]

History

Bangladesh became an independent country in 1971. Since 1972, electricity in Bangladesh had been produced and managed by the Bangladesh Power Development Board under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. Meghnaghat Power Company limited was created by the government as part of an effort to create subdivisions of the Bangladesh Power Development Board and divide its responsibilities on 23 November 1996. Meghnaghat Power Company limited was rebranded on 16 February 2004 as the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh. The majority of the shares of the company are held by Bangladesh Power Development Board. [3] The government plans to offload the shares of the company on the stock exchange. [4] It is constructing Siddhirganj power plant in Narayanganj along with Samsung C&T Corporation of South Korea and Isolux Ingenieria SA of Spain. It is one of the most expensive power plants in the world. [5] [6]

The company is now under the Power Division of the Bangladesh Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources and serving a total number of 604,304 consumers as of 31 December 2013. Md. Selim Uddin, rank of additional secretary, is the chairperson of DESCO and Engr. Md. Kausar Ameer Ali is the managing director.

Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) is a Public Limited Company under the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh, that manages the distribution of electricity to the customers of the Dhaka City Corporation area. The company, created as a part of the Power Sector Reform Programme, was registered on 25 October 2005 under the Companies Act, 1994. The government owns 100% share of the company. DPDC started commercial operation on 1 July 2008 taking over from Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA). All the assets and liabilities of DESA were transferred to DPDC through an agreement signed in September 2008.

Siddhirganj, is one of the oldest industrial cities of Bangladesh. It is located in the bank of Shitalakshya River, Narayanganj. The Siddhirganj Industrial Zone has more than 15 thousand factories and industrial establishments. Adamjee Jute Mills was established in Siddhirganj in 1951 and was once the largest jute mill in the world. This city is also one of the largest exporter in the country. In 2018–2019, the Adamjee export processing zone in Siddhirganj exported more than 4 billion US dollars' worth of goods.
