The Payra 1320 MW thermal power plant is a 1,320 megawatt coal-fired power station built in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali District in southern Bangladesh. [1] [2] It is a joint venture between the North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (NWPGCL) and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC). [3] Till May 2023, this plant was producing 700 to 1000 megawatts of electricity every day.

History

On 19 March 2015, a deal was signed between NWPGCL and the CMC to set up the Payra Power Plant. [4] The joint venture was named Bangladesh-China Power Company Limited (BCPCL). [4] On 29 March 2016, BCPCL signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with consortium of NEPC &CECC for the installation of the power plant. [5]

The plant consists of two units, each with a capacity of 660 MW. [6] The cost was estimated initially around US$1.56 billion; [7] the total project cost was US$2.48 billion. [8] The plant has been built on an area of 397 hectare. [9] The first unit became operational on the 15th May 2020 and the second unit on the 8th December 2020. It is the largest electricity generating unit of Bangladesh currently in operation. On 21 March 2022, PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the power plant after it was fully completed.

Bangladesh first conceived building a nuclear power plant in 1961. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1973. The country currently operates a TRIGA research reactor at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Savar.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (Bengali: রূপপুর পারমাণবিক বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্র) is a 2.4 GWe nuclear power plant project in Bangladesh. The nuclear power plant is being constructed at Rooppur of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna District, on the bank of the river Padma, 87 miles (140 km) west of Dhaka. It will be the country's first nuclear power plant, and the first of the two units is expected to go into operation in 2024. The VVER-1200/523 Nuclear reactor and critical infrastructures are being built by the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. In the main construction period, the total number of employees will reach 12,500, including 2,500 specialists from Russia. It is expected to generate around 15% of the country's electricity when completed.

The Duyên Hải Power Station is a complex of under-construction coal-fired power plants in Vietnam. It is located in Mu U Hamlet, Dan Thanh Commune, Duyên Hải District, Trà Vinh Province. The complex will have a total capacity of 3,689 MW. It includes also a seaport coal terminal, to be built by China Communications Construction Company, with a capacity of 12 million tonnes of coal and oil per year.

The Rampal Power Station is a 1320 megawatt coal-fired power station currently under construction at Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat District in Khulna, Bangladesh. The Port of Payra is a seaport located at Kalapara in Patuakhali, Bangladesh. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 2013. The port was officially inaugurated in 2016. It is located on the Ramnabad Channel near the Bay of Bengal. The port is undergoing several Development and expansion and the project is expected to be completed in 202.

Bangladesh Diesel Plant Limited is a state owned company in Bangladesh, that is operated by Bangladesh Army. As of 2023, General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed is the chairman of the board of directors and Brig Gen Md Reazur Rahman is the managing director of Bangladesh Diesel Plant Limited.

Cuddalore IL&FS Power Station is a 1,200-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Tamil Nadu, India.

North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) is a state owned power and electric company in Bangladesh and is located in UTC Building, 8 Panthapath, Kawranbazar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is an enterprise of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).

Ashuganj Power Station is located near to the Titas Gas field and at the bank of river Meghna, Bangladesh. It consists of 1627 megawatt units. An agreement was signed in 1966 with a foreign construction company to establish a Thermal Power Plant in Ashuganj. It is owned and operated by Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd.

Emba Hunutlu power station is a 1320 MW coal fired power station in Turkey in Adana Province. As of 2022 it is the largest Chinese foreign direct investment in the country. Despite opposition from many environmental organisations the plant was started up in 2022 and burns Russian coal as it is cheaper than other coal. The plant is less than 2 km from another coal-fired power station, İsken Sugözü.
