Emil Svensk (born 12 July 1993) is a Swedish orienteering competitor. His achievements include winning gold medals both in the World Orienteering Championships and the European Orienteering Championships.

Sports career

Junior years

He won a gold medal in the middle distance at the 2013 Junior World Orienteering Championships. [1]

2017 2019

Svensk had his senior career breakthrough at the first round of the 2017 Orienteering World Cup, where he came third in both the Sprint and the Long distance pursuit. [1] At the 2018 European Orienteering Championships in Cadempino he won a silver medal in the mixed sprint relay with the Swedish team. [1] He competed at the 2018 World Orienteering Championships in Latvia, where he placed sixth in the sprint final, [2] and won a gold medal in the mixed sprint relay, together with Karolin Ohlsson, Jonas Leandersson and Tove Alexandersson. [3] In the 2019 World Orienteering Championships in Norway he participated in the winning Swedish relay team together with Johan Runesson and Gustav Bergman.

2020-

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Svensk did not participate in any international races from March 2020 to March 2021. [4] Within 2 months of returning to competitive orienteering, Svensk attained his biggest individual success- a gold medal in the sprint distance at the 2021 European Orienteering Championships in Neuchâtel. [5]

In the 2023 World Orienteering Championships he participated together with Albin Ridefeldt and Gustav Bergman in the Swedish relay team which won the bronze medal.

He won a bronze medal in sprint at the 2024 World Orienteering Championships in Edinburgh, behind Martin Regborn and Tino Polsini. [6]

He placed sixth in the middle distance at the 2024 European Orienteering Championships in Hungary, [7] and came second in the Relay with the Swedish team. [8]

Club Orienteering

Svensk is well-known for his achievements in club orienteering, where he runs for Stora Tuna OK. With Stora Tuna, Svensk won the Jukola relay 5 times consecutively in 2019, 21, 22, 23 and 24, with Svensk as the last-leg runner every year except 2022. [9] Stora Tuna also won the 2024 Tiomila relay for the first time since 1964, with Svensk again being on last leg. This achievement meant that Stora Tuna won the men's and women's relay at both Tiomila and Jukola in the same year- the first club ever to achieve this feat. [10]

Athletics

Svensk has won a bronze medal in the 10 km road race at the 2018 Swedish Athletics Championships, [11] and in 2022, the Swedish was third in the Lidingöloppet over 30 km. [12]

Personal life

Svensk was born in Borlänge in 1993. [1] Svensk has three brothers, Joakim (born 1991), Jesper (born 1998) and Viktor (born 2001), who are all competitive orienteers that contributed to Stora Tuna's victories at Tiomila and Jukola. [10] Both Jesper and Viktor have competed for Sweden at either senior or junior level. [13]

Daniel Hubmann is a Swiss orienteering competitor. Hubmann is the most successful male Swiss orienteer of all time, with 9 Gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships. In 2023, with his victory in the relay at the 2023 World Orienteering Championships, Hubmann became the oldest competitor to win a gold medal at the World Orienteering Championships, at the age of 40 years and 61 days. Hubmann is currently the third most successful male orienteer of all time, behind Thierry Gueorgiou and Olav Lundanes, and has won more medals in total than any other male orienteer.

The European Orienteering Championships were first held in 1962. They have been held biennially since 2000. From 2020, the European Orienteering Championships will be held annually, with sprint events and forest events in alternate years.

Magne Dæhli is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, ski-orienteer, and cross-country skier. His achievements include five medals in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships, of which three are gold medals. His best individual performances include a silver medal in the long distance from the European Orienteering Championships, and a bronze medal in the middle distance from the 2019 World Orienteering Championships.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Maja Alm</span> Danish orienteer (born 1988)

Maja Møller Alm is a Danish orienteering and Athletics competitor who has won seven World Championships and two World Games titles. She is especially known for her four gold medals on the sprint distance, where she has won the title four years in a row: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. She is also a medalist from the Junior World Championships. Since 2006 she has been coached by Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. Alm is remarkable for her dominant running speed, which gives her a great advantage over other competitors at the sprint distance.

He received bronze medals in sprint at the World Orienteering Championships in Kyiv 2007 and Olomouc 2008. His brother, Lars, is a member of the Rockford Icehogs

Ida Bobach is a Danish orienteering competitor who was Junior World Champion in 2009, and became triple Junior World Champion from 2010, when she won the sprint, long distance and the relay. She represents the club OK Pan Århus, and since 2007, has received training from Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. In 2015 she won gold medals at the World Championships in the long and Relay.

Tove Alexandersson is a Swedish foot orienteer, ski orienteer, skyrunner, trail runner, ski mountaineer and skysnow runner. Alexandersson has won gold medals at world championships in five different sports plus a silver medal in a sixth sport, and has won a total of 21 gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships, making her the second most successful orienteer in history by number of gold medals at World Championships, behind Simone Niggli-Luder. Alexandersson holds the record for the number of gold medals in a row at the World Orienteering Championships, winning 11 in a row between 2018 and 2022.

The 2018 Orienteering World Cup was the 24th edition of the Orienteering World Cup. The 2018 Orienteering World Cup consisted of 11 individual events and 9 relay events. The events were located in Switzerland, Latvia, Norway and Czech Republic. The European Orienteering Championships in Ticino, Switzerland and the 2018 World Orienteering Championships in Riga, Latvia were included in the World Cup.

Stora Tuna OK is a Swedish orienteering club in Borlänge. It was the orienteering section of Stora Tuna IK until 2009.
