Emma Salokoski (born 28 October 1976 in Helsinki, Finland [1] ) is a Finnish singer. She sings in the Emma Salokoski Ensemble (a continuation of the Emma Salokoski Trio) and in Quintessence and is an active member in the funk music band Q-Continuum. She also composes and writes her own songs; all songs on the album Kiellettyjä asioita were written by Salokoski and most of them were also composed by her. [2]
Salokoski was born in Helsinki in 1976. Her mother is anthropologist Märta Salokoski, who has studied the culture of the Ovambo people in Namibia based on Emil Liljeblad's collection. [3] [4] Märta Salokoski is Finland-Swedish [5] and Emma Salokoski speaks Swedish as her native language. She has two brothers. When Salokoski was three years old her family moved to Moscow, Soviet Union (present-day Russia), where her father worked in a bank. [1] The family moved back to Finland three years later. [6] Salokoski went to a Swedish-speaking school until the ninth grade, when she moved to a Finnish-speaking musical class. [5]
Salokoski started her music hobby at the age of 11 by playing the violin, but soon moved to the viola. [7] When studying at the Sibelius gymnasium at the age of 18 she started to concentrate on singing. [8] The first band where she sang was her little brother's progressive rock band. [5] After taking a year's break from her studies after gymnasium Salokoski moved to Stockholm, Sweden to study musical theatre at the Kulturama university of performing arts. [1] She graduated in 1998 and worked at the Tampere Theatre in the musical Rent and at the Helsinki City Theatre in the musical Les Misérables for a year. [7] After this she moved to study at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki after having applied there for three times. [6] In 2001, she moved to the jazz music department at the Sibelius Academy. [7] Salokoski dropped out of her studies at these last two institutions. [1]
In 2006, Salokoski became interested in the Complete vocal technique of singing. [9] She had a few singing classes in Denmark and later participated in a course in Finland for a year. [1] She graduated as a teacher of singing techniques in Copenhagen in late 2009. [10]
Salokoski has been a member of the band Quintessence since its founding in 1999. [8] In 2001, the band published its first EP record White Light and in the next year Texicalli Records published the band's debut album Talk Less Listen More . The band's second album 5 am was published in 2004. [7]
Salokoski first performed as a solo artist in spring 2000. [11] In autumn 2003, the Emma Salokoski Trio, including Salokoski, guitarist Mikko Kosonen and Lauri Porra who is better known as the bass player of Stratovarius, published its first EP record Puutarhassa. [12] The EP spent seven weeks at The Official Finnish Charts, reaching place #12. [13] The record included two Finnish songs and two Brazilian bossa nova classics. [14]
The band was later joined by the keyboard player Tuomo Prättälä, who had appeared on the trio's EP as a guest artist, and by the percussionist and drummer Marko Timonen. At this time the band renamed itself from Emma Salokoski Trio to Emma Salokoski Ensemble. [12] In December 2005, the qunitet published the album Kaksi mannerta, [7] which had been named after its namesake song composed after Aulikki Oksanen's poem. [12] The album was Salokoski's first publication entirely in Finnish. [7] She has also written the songs "Mina Maneira", "Näkymätön" (Finnish lyrics) and "Ilmaa" on the record, as well as composed and written the song "Sua jos aattelen". [15] The album reached place #4 at The Official Finnish Charts, and the single "Miksi sä meet" on the album reached place #2 at the Radio Suomi charts. [7] The album reached the 15,000 sales threshold for a gold record in Finland in January 2008. [16]
Emma Salokoski Ensemble's second album Veden alla was published on 27 August 2008. The album contains the band's own production as well as songs from J. Karjalainen, Dave Lindholm and Tuomari Nurmio. [16] Instead of the bossa nova rhythms of the first records, the musical style on the album has drawn influence from jazz and folk music. [17] [18] [19] The album was recorded in November and October at the Finnvox studio in Helsinki. [9] On its first week, the album reached place #2 at The Official Finnish Charts and held the place for three weeks. [20] The single "Rakkaus polttaa" published from the record went to the top place of the Radio Helsinki chart and place #2 at the Radio Suomi chart. [16] After publishing the record, the band went on a tour of ten concerts starting on 11 September in Järvenpää and finishing at the Tavastia Club in Helsinki on 1 October. [21]
Salokoski has had guest appearances on records of many other artists (Don Johnson Big Band, Husky Rescue, Tuomo, [22] Sami Saari [23] ) and performed with many famous Finnish jazz musicians and bands (such as Jukka Perko, Severi Pyysalo and Sakari Kukko). [7] Salokoski and the Ilmiliekki Quartet have planned to publish an album containing Swedish songs, and in March 2009 Salokoski and Maria Ylipää recorded an album whose songs were composed after Finnish poems. [24] Salokoski has also made some songs for other artists such as V-Chips and Husky Rescue. [25] Emma Salokoski also leads her own choir Emma Salokoski Voices, which has performed two musical theatre plays, Plastic Bride and Body Positive!
Salokoski played the waitress Liisa in the 2004 film Keisarikunta . [7] At the 2006 Emma-gaala, Salokoski was awarded best female vocalist of the year. [26] She also appeared on the third season of the Finnish TV show Kuorosota from 2010 to 2011.
Salokoski's father is the cousin of the Finnish singer Pekka Streng. [5]

They originally played hardcore punk, but soon expanded to play a wide variety of rock formats, including progressive rock, heavy metal, and mainstream rock 'n' roll. Throughout their career, they have been influenced by progressive rock bands such as Rush, Yes, Tool and King Crimson. The progressive influence is most evident on their albums Dinosaurus Stereophonicus (2000) and Talvikuningas (2007).
Swallow the Sun is a Finnish death-doom band founded in 2000 by Juha Raivio. Their death-doom style emphasizes melody and atmosphere, and occasionally steps into gothic and black metal territory. They have released eight full-length albums, one triple album, one EP, one demo, and seven singles.
Maija Johanna Vilkkumaa is a Finnish pop rock singer-songwriter. Beginning her musical hobbies playing piano at an age before school, Vilkkumaa studied in high school where she and her friends set up the band Tarharyhmä in 1990, which broke up in 1995. While studying Finnish language at the University of Helsinki, she started to take singing lessons and went on to start her solo career in 1999.
Sielun Veljet was a Finnish rock band of the 1980s. They were formed soon after the disbanding of Hassisen Kone by its former frontman Ismo Alanko. Sielun Veljet never achieved the fame or the record sales figures of Hassisen Kone, but they became famous for their powerful stage presence and aggressive, shamanistic post-punk musical style. Most of the band's recorded material is sung in Finnish, except for their 1989 album Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars. They have also recorded English-language versions of their songs under the moniker L'amourder. In 2011, they released a new song, "Nukkuva hirviö".
Lauri Porra is a Finnish bass guitarist and composer who has written scores for films and other media, as well as commissions from orchestras such as the Lahti Symphony and the Finnish Radio Symphony. He is also known for his work as the bass guitarist in the Finnish power metal band Stratovarius. Porra is a fourth generation musician, and the great-grandson of famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
Paula Julia Vesala is a Finnish singer-songwriter, actress, and playwright. She was one of two singers and main lyricist in the pop rock duo PMMP along with Mira Luoti. Her solo career began in 2015 under the stage name "Vesala". She has composed songs for other well-known Finnish artists such as Vesa-Matti Loiri, Jenni Vartiainen, and Antti Tuisku.

Jenni Mari Vartiainen is a Finnish pop singer. Before her professional musical endeavours, she was a figure skater in her teenage years and attended the Kuopio Senior High of Music and Dance. Vartiainen rose to publicity by winning the Finnish talent show Popstars in October 2002 with Susanna Korvala, Ushma Karnani and Jonna Pirinen. The four formed the band Gimmel that released three studio albums, sold over 160,000 records and received three Emma Awards, accolades for outstanding achievements in music, awarded by the Finnish music industry federation, Musiikkituottajat. The band broke up in October 2004.
Seija Saara Maria Simola, married Franzén, was a Finnish singer. She began her career musical in the mid-1960s in the band Eero Seija & Kristian Trio, and her debut solo album was released in 1970: Seija Simola 1. The 1970s would be her most successful decade.
Laura Sippola is a Finnish pianist and a singer-songwriter based in Helsinki, Finland. She works as a freelance musician and a composer. In 2017 she completed a Doctor of Music degree at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki.
Kinetik Control is a Finnish rock band formed in 2004 by the composer and lyricist Sauli Vuoti. The band's sound used to incorporate electronic elements to rock and pop music, but nowadays the music is more pop oriented. Kinetik Control has released eight singles, one EP and three albums. Kinetik Control's most known songs are "The Mutt", "No-One Knows About Us", "Give A Little Love", "All Fours" and "Chinese Medicine", which featured Michael Monroe as a guest musician.

Felix Elmeri Zenger is a Finland-Swedish beatboxer and multiple freestyle footbag Finnish champion. Zenger formed the Iiro Rantala New Trio together with Iiro Rantala and Marzi Nyman. Zenger joined the Don Johnson Big Band in 2018.
