It began in 1970 as a two-day festival of films, shot by students of Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts, presenting 33 movies that year. In 2010, there were 439 films presented, making it the biggest film festival in Ukraine, with an audience of 127,000. The president of the festival is Andrii Khalpakhchi.

The festival opened with the opening gala presented by actor Samuel Finzi followed by the world premiere of the film My Salinger Year which was selected for the Berlinale Special section. The Metamorphosis of Birds is a Portuguese feature-length hybrid creative documentary film directed by Catarina Vasconcelos and produced by the production company Primeira Idade, world premiered at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2020, where it was awarded the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film at the Encounters Section. It was selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.
The 71st annual Berlin International Film Festival took place from 1 to 5 March 2021 as a virtual festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An in-person event has also been tentatively scheduled for June, pending the resolution of the COVID-19 issue.

The festival opened with François Ozon's drama film Peter von Kant. Isabelle Huppert was awarded Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement on 15 February 2022 at the Berlinale Palast award ceremony. Her film by Laurent Larivière, À propos de Joan was also screened.
The Novelist's Film is a 2022 South Korean black and white drama film written and directed by Hong Sang-soo. The Novelist's Film, starring Lee Hye-young and Kim Min-hee, was described as the film that "celebrates the beauty of chance encounters, while talking about the importance of authenticity in the dishonest world of cinema" by the executive director Carlo Chatrian of 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, where it premiered in the competition section on February 16, 2022. It is the third consecutive year that Hong Sang-soo has been invited to the festival. The film won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the festival, which is the 4th for the director Hong Sang-soo's films. It was released theatrically in South Korea on April 21, 2022.
