Estonia is a Finnish eight-part drama television series. The series tells about the sinking of the MS Estonia ferry in 1994. [1] Based on the actual investigation reports, the story follows the accident investigation in Finland, Sweden and Estonia through several people, in connection with which we also see events on the car ferry, the sinking and its rescue efforts. The series is created by Miikko Oikkonen and directed by Måns Månsson and Juuso Syrjä. [1] [2] The series was released on the C More streaming service on 12 October 2023. [4] [5] The series has also been selected for the primetime program of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. [6]

Production

According to MTV Oy's announcement, Estonia is so far the most expensive drama series produced in Finland. [2] [7] The budget of the series is around €15 million. [8] It has been financed by C More, MTV Oy and the Swedish television channel TV4. [2] [8] The Finnish Film Foundation has granted the project development support in the years 2020–2022 totaling €225,000. [9] The actors of the series are from Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Germany. [10]

Filming of the series began in June 2022 and ended in October of the same year. [2] [10] Filming takes place in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Turkey. The sea scenes are shot at studios in Belgium that focus on water scenes. [1] [3] [8] [10] [11] The special effects are made, for example, in the United Kingdom and Canada. [12]

MS <i>Estonia</i> Cruiseferry sunk in the Baltic Sea in 1994

MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 for the Finnish shipping company Rederi Ab Sally by Meyer Werft, in Papenburg, West Germany. It was employed on ferry routes between Finland and Sweden by various companies until the end of January 1993, when it was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn–Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives. An official inquiry found that failure of the locks on the bow visor caused water to flood the car deck and quickly capsize the ship. The report also noted a lack of crew action. A 2023 investigation noted additional construction flaws in the bow visor.

MS <i>Silja Europa</i> Cruiseferry built in 1993

MS Silja Europa is a cruiseferry constructed at Meyer Werft Germany for the Swedish ferry operator Rederi AB Slite, a part of Viking Line. At 59,914 gross tonnage (GT), she is the largest ship commissioned for and to ever operate for Tallink Silja, and is the tenth-largest cruiseferry in the world.

Time of Roses is a 1969 Finnish science fiction film directed by Risto Jarva, about a documentary filmmaker in 2012 trying to find the true essence of a glamor model, dead for forty years, for a TV film biography. The script was written by Peter von Bagh, Jarva, and Jaakko Pakkasvirta. The model was played by Ritva Vepsä and the documentarian by Arto Tuominen. Sinking of the MS <i>Estonia</i> 1994 maritime disaster on Baltic Sea

MS Estonia sank on Wednesday, 28 September 1994, between about 00:50 and 01:50 (UTC+2) as the ship was crossing the Baltic Sea, en route from Tallinn, Estonia, to Stockholm, Sweden. The sinking was one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century. It is one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a European ship, after the Titanic in 1912 and the Empress of Ireland in 1914, and the deadliest peacetime shipwreck to have occurred in European waters, with 852 lives lost.

The work deals with human adaptation to nature's narrative.

Spede is a 2023 Finnish biographical film directed by Aleksi Delikouras. The film is about the lives of Pertti "Spede" Pasanen, Vesa-Matti Loiri, Simo Salminen and Ere Kokkonen in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Uuno Turhapuro character had just been invented.
