Estonia is a Finnish eight-part drama television series. The series tells about the sinking of the MS Estonia ferry in 1994. [1] Based on the actual investigation reports, the story follows the accident investigation in Finland, Sweden and Estonia through several people, in connection with which we also see events on the car ferry, the sinking and its rescue efforts. The series is created by Miikko Oikkonen and directed by Måns Månsson and Juuso Syrjä. [1] [2] The series was released on the C More streaming service on 12 October 2023. [4] [5] The series has also been selected for the primetime program of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. [6]

Production

According to MTV Oy's announcement, Estonia is so far the most expensive drama series produced in Finland. [2] [7] The budget of the series is around €15 million. [8] It has been financed by C More, MTV Oy and the Swedish television channel TV4. [2] [8] The Finnish Film Foundation has granted the project development support in the years 2020–2022 totaling €225,000. [9] The actors of the series are from Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Germany. [10]

Filming of the series began in June 2022 and ended in October of the same year. [2] [10] Filming takes place in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Turkey. The sea scenes are shot at studios in Belgium that focus on water scenes. [1] [3] [8] [10] [11] The special effects are made, for example, in the United Kingdom and Canada. [12]

MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 for the Finnish company Rederi Ab Sally by Meyer Werft, in Papenburg, West Germany. She was employed on ferry routes between Finland and Sweden by various companies until 1993, when she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn–Stockholm route. Sinking of the MS <i>Estonia</i> 1994 maritime disaster on Baltic Sea

MS Estonia sank on Wednesday, 28 September 1994, between about 00:50 and 01:50 (UTC+2) as the ship was crossing the Baltic Sea, en route from Tallinn, Estonia, to Stockholm, Sweden. The sinking was one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century. It is one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a European ship, after the Titanic in 1912 and the Empress of Ireland in 1914, and the deadliest peacetime shipwreck to have occurred in European waters, with 852 lives stated at the time as officially lost.
