Eugene Ankomah is a self-taught British contemporary visual artist of Ghanaian descent, with an art career that has spanned more than eighteen years.

Early life

Born and raised in the London Borough of Brent, northwest London, [2] [3] Ankomah spent his early childhood living in Ghana with his parents and four siblings, before his family relocated to the United Kingdom in 1990. [4]

He attended Willesden High School in 1991 now known as Capital City Academy, He then studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, before going on to earn a bachelor's degree in Illustration and Fine Art at the University of Westminster. [1] [5]

Awards and prizes

At the age of 17, Ankomah became the first ever recipient of the Peter Evans Award, awarded by his school for best student, winning a prize fund of £900 as part of the prize. [5] He has been awarded from The Apthorp Fund for Young Artists [6] (which he won twice in 1999 and 2002), Urban Tension' Prize and Contemporary Portraits' Prize.

Shows and exhibitions

To date, Ankomah has taken part in more than 90 shows and exhibitions.

He was chosen by the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) – then chaired by Melvyn Bragg [7] (presenter of ITV's The South Bank Show and long-time broadcaster) – to showcase his work in a 2003 major solo show entitled The Birth [8] at London's Carnaby Street.[ citation needed ]

In 2008, Ankomah took part in a group show entitled An Expo of Artful Dodgers [9] among a list of UK visual artists. He was part of a selected group of artists described as "the cream of up-and-coming talent" by The Daily Telegraph . [9]

During this period Ankomah took part in several other group shows, including Graffiti Express [10] (which he curated), an experimental group show which took place at The Wall at the Gallery in Willesden Green.

Commissions and projects

In 2002 Ankomah was one of a group of artists that worked on a flag for Buckingham Palace in honour of the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II. [5] In 2010 his works were part of a Coalition Government Christmas card. [11]

The Willesden United Synagogue Cemetery, usually known as Willesden Jewish Cemetery, is a Jewish cemetery at Beaconsfield Road, Willesden, in the London Borough of Brent, England. It opened in 1873 on a 20-acre (0.08 km2) site. It has been described as the "Rolls-Royce" of London's Jewish cemeteries and is designated Grade II on Historic England's Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The cemetery, which has 29,800 graves, has many significant memorials and monuments. Four of them are listed at Grade II. They include the tomb of Rosalind Franklin, who was a co-discoverer of the structure of DNA.

Queen's Park is an area located partly in the City of Westminster and partly in the London Borough of Brent. Some of the area within Westminster forms a civil parish, the first to be created in London since the right of communities to establish civil parishes was enacted in 2007. The area is located 3.9 miles (6.3 km) north-west of Charing Cross, and centred around a 30 acres (12 ha) park, which opened in 1887 and was named in honour of Queen Victoria. The area gives its name to Queens Park Rangers football club.

The College of North West London (CNWL) is a large further education college in north-west London, England. It was established in 1991 by the merger between Willesden Technical College and Kilburn Polytechnic in the London Borough of Brent. Today there are two campuses in the borough, in Willesden and Wembley Park, while a smaller training centre also exists in King's Cross in the borough of Camden. Over 11,000 students were enrolled at the college as of 2015.

Owusu-Ankomah is a leading contemporary African artist with origins in Ghana. His work addresses themes of identity and the body, using his trademark motif of Adinkra symbolism. His work is also "influenced by the art of the Renaissance, handwritten texts from ancient cultures such as the adinkra symbol system of the Akan people of Ghana, Chinese ideograms, and contemporary global cultures." Owusu-Ankomah is a trained artist from Achimota college, near Accra, "established in 1936 and in 1952 incorporated into the University of Science and Technology at Kumasi."

Ablade GloverCV is a Ghanaian artist and educator. He has exhibited widely, building an international reputation over several decades, as well as being regarded as a seminal figure on the West African art scene. His work is held in many prestigious private and public collections, which include the Imperial Palace of Japan, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. He has received several national and international awards, including the Order of the Volta in Ghana, and is a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. He was Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Art Education and Dean of the College of Art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology until 1994.
