Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique, is a country located in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini (Swaziland) and South Africa to the southwest. The sovereign state is separated from the Comoros, Mayotte and Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital of Mozambique is Maputo while Matola is the largest city, being a suburb of Maputo.

The Lutheran World Federation is a global communion of national and regional Lutheran churches headquartered in the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. The federation was founded in the Swedish city of Lund in the aftermath of the Second World War in 1947 to coordinate the activities of the many differing Lutheran churches. Since 1984, the member churches are in pulpit and altar fellowship, with common doctrine as the basis of membership and mission activity.

The Christian Council of Mozambique is an ecumenical Christian organization in Mozambique. It was founded in 1948 and is a member of the World Council of Churches and the Fellowship of Christian Councils in Southern Africa.

Protestants in Mozambique are part of a variety of denominations. Since the Portuguese colonial period in Mozambique, the Catholic Church has been the main Christian group in the country, followed by various Protestant mission churches and African Independent Churches (AICs). The results of the last census show that Catholicism is no longer the most important religion in the southern provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane. Zion believers, belonging to the largest AICs, constitute the majority of the population, exceeding the Catholics. Looking at the whole of Mozambique, Zionism is the third religion, representing 16 per cent of the total population, only surpassed by Catholicism (28%) and Islam (18%). For the first time, Evangelicals and Pentecostals were counted together as one separate category in the 2007 Census, representing 11 per cent of the total population and thus are the fourth religious group in the country.

Lutheranism by region

Lutheranism is present on all inhabited continents with an estimated 80 million adherents, out of which 74.2 million are affiliated with the Lutheran World Federation. A major movement that first began the Reformation, it constitutes one of the largest Protestant branches claiming around 80 million out of 920 million Protestants. The Lutheran World Federation brings together the vast majority of Lutherans. Apart from it, there are also other organisations such as the International Lutheran Council and the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference, as well as multiple independent Lutheran denominations.
