The Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Christian denomination in south India, which was established in 1919 [1] and has approximately 500,000 members. [2] Its headquarters is in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. [1] It is one of the prominent mainline Lutheran churches in Tamil Nadu. [3] [4] [5] [6]

On 14 January 1919, the Tamil congregation of different German, Danish, and Swedish Lutheran missions joined together to form the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC). In March 1921, the constitution of the TELC was amended to include the structure of episcopacy. In 1921, a Swedish missionary, Ernst Heuman, was ordained as the first bishop of the TELC. The bishop of TELC holds the title Bishop of Tranquebar. In 1956, R B Manickam became the first Indian to be ordained as the bishop of TELC. [7]

The bishops have the title Bishop of Tranquebar . [8] It belongs to the Lutheran World Federation. [2] The Leipzig Evangelical Lutheran Mission and Church of Sweden Mission were active in the area of Trichy in the 19th century and are still active there today. This Lutheran church comes under United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India. [9]

Tharangambadi, formerly Tranquebar, is a town in the Mayiladuthurai district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast. Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute is an ecumenical seminary situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, South India. It is affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College (University).

Rev. N. Samuel of Tranquebar was a professor in divinity, pastor in the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (T.E.L.C.), and a hymnodist. He was a famous poet and author of many books. He was also the first member of the Leipzig Evangelical Lutheran Mission (L.E.L.M.) Council.

The Coimbatore Diocese is one of the 24 dioceses of the Church of South India (CSI), a United Protestant denomination.

Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Limited (TANSI) (Tamil: தமிழ்நாடு சிறுதொழில் வளர்ச்சிக் கழகம் (வரையறுக்கப்பட்டது) (டான்சி)) is a state-government undertaking of Government of Tamil Nadu located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The Diocese of Vellore is one among the 24 dioceses of Church of South India, a United Protestant denomination. The motto chosen for the diocese was "In the Cross of Christ I Glory". Its emblem includes a banyan tree - the tree under which the Scudder brothers prayed before they decided to begin their work in the area of Vellore.

Tiruchirappalli is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the fourth most populous city and is the densest regional urban area in the state. According to the 2001 census, Tiruchirappalli had a population of 752,066 with in the city limits and an extended urban agglomeration population of 866,354. According to the 2011 census, Tiruchirappalli had a population of 847,387 within the city limits The city's sex ratio of 1025 is among the best for any city in India which has a population of one million or more.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tranquebar Mission</span>

The Tranquebar Mission was established in 1706 by two German missionaries from Halle namely, Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau. Ziegenbalg and Plütschau responded to the appeal of King Frederick IV of Denmark to establish a mission for the natives, living in the Danish East India Company colony of Tranquebar. The mission was responsible for the printing and publication of the Bible in the Tamil language. In 2006, the 300 years anniversary of the mission was celebrated by the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC), with many international delegates in attendance. A monument to acknowledge 300 years of the mission was raised by the TELC on this occasion.
