American band Exile has released 14 studio albums, five compilation albums, two live albums, 40 singles, and eight music videos.
Initially, Exile was a rock and roll and rhythm and blues band, releasing several unsuccessful singles on a number of labels including Date and Wooden Nickel. The band broke through in 1978 with the soft rock hit "Kiss You All Over", a number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. After a number of unsuccessful followups, Exile shifted to country music in 1983 with their first country music release "High Cost of Leaving". Between late 1983 and early 1988, Exile charted ten number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. [1] While the band has not charted anywhere since 1991, Exile has continued to issue albums into the 21st century.

Originally known as the Exiles, the band played cover songs and local events in the state of Kentucky for a number of years before becoming a backing band on the touring revue Caravan of Stars. After a series of failed singles, Exile achieved mainstream success in 1978 with "Kiss You All Over", a number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. This iteration of the band mostly played soft rock and pop music, with Jimmy Stokley handling most of the lead vocals along with assistance from lead guitarist J.P. Pennington.

Stanley has stated his admiration and love of Stewart's music numerous times, and that "Hard Luck Woman" was inspired by Rod Stewart, in particular the songs "Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well". While Stewart's music served as a partial inspiration for the song, the nautical themed song "Brandy" by American pop-rock band Looking Glass served as Stanley's main inspiration.
