Major twist

The initial major twist this season was that for the first time in the history of any Survivor franchise worldwide one hundred contestants would take part in a single season. This twist, however, didn't last very long as in episode 2 twenty five of the contestants voluntarily left the game, in episode 3 twenty one contestants were eliminated as they were not picked to be on either the North team or the South team, in episode 4 thirteen members of the North team were eliminated following a loss in the first immunity challenge, in episode 5 the entire South team was eliminated following their loss at the second immunity challenge, and in episode 6 eight members of the North team were eliminated following an elimination challenge to determine who would be the final group of contestants that would make up the jury and final two.

Secret Island

From episode 6 on all eliminated contestants were sent to the "Secret island", those living on the island would each be given a chance to return to the game through a win at an immunity challenge or through a vote before the semi-finals. Aside from Nelleke and Kristien who left the competition in episode 10, and Frans who was ejected from episode 12, all contestants that went to the island remained there until the vote to return. Following the vote to return, Muriël returned to the competition. Muriel's return was short lived as she, Lieke, and Marcel were all eliminated in the semi-final rounds. Ultimately, it was Vincent who beat the odds and went on to win the season over Willem by a jury vote of 4-3.

Robert Drakwind, formerly known as Robert Andersson, returned to compete for a third time since 1999 along with his girlfriend, Anna Carin Wase. Both jokers became "chiefs" of one of the tribes and were given immunity at all pre-merge tribal councils, however from episode 4 on they could be challenged by any member of their tribe for the position of chief. If challenged, the chief and challenger would face off in a duel in which the winner would become chief and the loser would be eliminated from the competition. The season began airing on September 5, 2005, and concluded on November 28, 2005. The major twist this season was that the tribes were initially divided up by the participants' ages. The Jong (Young) tribe was composed of the contestants age 30 and under and the Oud (Old) tribe was composed of contestants over the age of 40. Unbeknownst to the original tribes, there was a secret third tribe that consisted of two contestants, Esther Jacobs and Marnix Allegaert, who were in their 30s, who lived in an area known as "Secret Island". These two contestants were soon joined by Douwe Popma, who had been voted out immediately after a challenge. In episode 4, the two original teams were dismantled and the remaining players were mixed up into new tribes known as the North and South teams. With these new tribes, all who had previously been living on the Secret island joined one of the two new tribes in the game and Nicole Hendriks, who had been eliminated in the previous episode, re-entered the game as a replacement for the large number of contestants who had left the game. Along with the new tribes came tribal leaders, who were elected in each episode and were immune at tribal council.

The major twist this season was that the tribes were initially divided up by gender with one "All-Star" contestant joining each tribe. These two All-Stars were, Klaar Lippe and Robin Ibens. Though the main twist may have seemed like a repeat of twists that occurred in previous seasons, unlike previous seasons with a similar twist this season male contestants were from Belgium and all females from the Netherlands. While the All-Star contestants weren't eligible to win, they could vote and following a tribal swap in episode 4, they could give any contestant on their tribe immunity at tribal council. Following the merge in episode 8, the twist that was "Losers Island", was introduced to the game. After a contestant was eliminated they would be sent to Losers island where they would wait until there were only two contestants left in the game at which point the six contestants on the island would vote for one of their own to return. When it came time to vote for a winner, the public, instead of a jury decided the winner. In episode 3, Kristine Ditlefsen, Jeanetter Elstad, Cecilie Heramb, and Tone Olsen all entered the game as jokers with two of each joining one of the two teams. The game changed again in episode 5 when the teams were dissolved and two new teams were formed based on gender. In a twist, in episode 6 Kim Cesar, Synnøve Kalleklev, Lisbeth Larsen, and Bjørnar Rødal entered the game as members of the newly formed west team. Along with this, in episode 6 the contestants temporarily returned to their original teams. However, following a duel in the same episode between David Sandem and Jeanette Elstad, in which Jeanette was eliminated, the two teams merged. Shoretly after the merge took place the remaining contestants were evacuated from the island for about ten days due to a bird flu break out. In episode 7, the west competed in an individual immunity challenge. After the challenge, Kim was eliminated by the winner of the challenge Bjørnar. Following this, Bjørnar along with Lisbeth and Synnøve joined the merge tribe. In episode 12, Atle Hansen and Synnøve competed in a duel against each other in which Synnøve was eliminated and Atle received reward. In the final episode of the season, the four semi-finalists initially competed in the plank competition. Following the challenge Tone was voted out of the game by the winner and first finalist Alita Kristensen. Then the two remaining losers of the first competition, Atle and Stian Schie, competed in a final duel. Stian won and became the second finalist. Eventually, Alita Dagmar Kristensen won the season over Stian Schie by a jury vote of 8-3, becoming the first contestant to have begun the competition on the North team to win since 2004.

As the winner of this challenge Ilona van der Laan, along with Veronique De Pryker, who Ilona picked as the person she got along with the least, picked their tribes from the fifteen other contestants. The last person not picked, Björn Lemeirel, was eliminated from the game. Another twist occurred in episode four when each tribe was asked to pick one player that they trusted the most. The North team chose Melvin Pigot, while the South team chose Richard Mackowia. These two contestants were both sent to a secret island called Entatula where the merge tribe of Panga would live. Eventually those living on the island had chosen all but Fleur Roozenburg, Lydia Guiso, Maxime Verbist, Ryan van Esch, and Veronique De Pryker to join them, they composed the Miniloc tribe and were forced to take part in a series of duels until only one remained and would return to the game. When it came time for the final four, the contestants took part in a couple of final challenges in order to determine who would be the finalists.
